Scoring for December

We have had a number of questions about the new scoring this month which we will address in this topic, as well as detail a few other scoring methods that are not published elsewhere.

1.) Only the first five new forum topics are awarded points in a twenty four hour period. If more than five are started in twenty four hours, the topic will still be started but no points are awarded. Topics will still be deleted if Judges feel the author is simply posting for points or doesn't meet general BGH rules, even if the author is under the limit.

2.) We will only be approving up to 50,000 points combined between Stories and Tips per member. This means that the maximum amount you can earn total throughout the month of December is 50,000 points between both Photo & Story and Tip submissions together. If you hit the limit, we can still publish the tip or story for no points, but the author will be given the choice. You can mix and match tips and stories to meet this limit.

3.) Only the first 100 Photos per member submitted to the photo gallery will receive points. This puts a maximum of 5000 points for photo gallery submissions per member. Beyond 100 photos you can still upload, delete, edit, whatever you would like but only the first 100 will be awarded points.  Photos approved for points must still meet Contest guidelines.

4.) How many times you comment on a given topic, blog, etc affects the comment score.

You guys remind me of the crew of the starship Enterprise fighting against the Borg.  We, like the Borg, were unstoppable, or so it seemed, until the Enterprise's crew figured out how to modulate and vary its phasers.  Needless to say, the Borg were defeated.

Changing the scoring is like modulating and varying the phaser frequency - keeps us honest and working hard.

I believe that this puts the scoring back into the post and the quality of the post.  I was getting tired of the questions that were one word or a repeat of a post that was answered some where else but the poster just wanted the points for asking it.  This along with the stories and the requirements of the stories.  I have been hunting for over 40 years with a rifle and for over 50 going on hunts but my problem is that there are no photos of any of those hunts and a story requires for you to submit a photo and I won't just drag a picture out of something that doesn't relate to the story.

While the contest are a great way for the forums to generate activity and the advertisers love it for all the extra hits that their advertisements get I'll be glad when we get back to a resemblence of normal around here.

my two  cents is that if the picture isn't of the hunt then it shouldn't be counted for the photo requirement.

That is what I was saying, I have over 40 years of hunting and no pictures to go with the stories so I am up the creek without any points for stories execpt for a couple more that I could submit.  You have to figure that in the 60's cameras were expensive items and and if you did have one you just didn't drag out out into the mud and snow of the hunting camps and pictures were not that really important.  The family was there to experience the hunt and didn't have to look at a picture to remember it.

I appreciate the fact that

I appreciate the fact that the game keeps changing. It keeps things new and keeps us guess but I am not sure what to think of all the caps on the different categories. It seems like there might be a log jam at the top when it is all said and done. It could make things interesting but I think it will be more random at the very end because I think the posting in that last day is going to be a marathon of 3 point posts ha ha. It is going to be interesting and VERY different... that is too say the least. Its good to see some new members taking part in the competition too. As long as they are not old members that decided to take advantage of the new rules by creating a new account. No way of telling I guess though.

The new rules do give an edge

The new rules do give an edge to new participants as all the posts you, I and Jim responded to last month are virgin posts for them whereas they are old low scoring posts for us.

I think you're the reason they limited the number of points you can earn from submitting stories and tips.  They probably read your post about submitting 28 stories right at the deadline and got to thinking OH @!#% this could happen.   They could all wait until the end and submit beaucoup stories that we'll have to read and score.

One difference from this month and last month is I am seeing lots of new topics being started.  Some are so lame I glad that I am not competing for the top prize otherwise I'd probably have to reply to them, but since I am not, I can just ignore them.

I tell you it is fun to watch the contest and the different strategies.  I've got my favorites that I am pulling for so it will be interesting to watch.

I was shooting for a million!

Rats! This was the month that I was shooting for a million points!  Yes

Oh, well - whatever works best for the whole site is ok by me.

I just really enjoy reading about the hunting experiences of many other people.  Applause

Even when you go hunting in a group, it often becomes a very individual matter, and it's only as you share these stories around a cup of coffe, a campfire or a computer that you truly understand what others experience on their hunts.

5 post limit or 5 new thread limit?

Does the 5 only for points limit apply to only new topics that you start or to all replies?

For instance, I have some stories I'd liek to post but I have already posted 5 times today so would I lose all potential points for the story if I post it today?  That would seem like good motivation to not post anything else until tomorrow. Can anyone clarify?

Is it 5 topics per user or 5 per forum even from 5 different users?
