Scope recommendations for Sako

I have just purchased a stainless steel Sako 75 in .308 that includes their scope mounts and rings for eastern hunting (and probably a western trip in the future). Now as I look for a scope I have basically set my sights on either Leupold VX-III or Zeiss Conquest in either 3-9 or 3.5-10. I am now wondering whether I need the 50mm objective or the 40 or 44 mm is adequate. I also want the scope to match the stainless which probably limits my choices. Any other options or opinions on my choices.

Welcome to BGH.
First question is : Are the rings one inch or 30mm. The slightly larger 30 mm rings are traditionaly known as" European rings" although some North American companies ar now making scopes in both diameters.
3- 9 x 40 provided enough Relative brightness for any hunting application and I would suspect that your rings are "standard rings" suitable for a scope with a 40 mm objective lens scope. A 50 mm objective lens would probably require a higher mounting system to keep the scope from touching the barrel, or simply ,won't fit"
There should be markings on the rings to tell us the model and possibly diameter.
The last thing I want to do it suggest a one inch scope tube for a set of 30mm rings, that doesn't work.
I see that The Conquest 3-9 x 40 comes in both colors

and remember the closer the scope is to the barrel the more accurate its gonna be. stay away from the 50mm your not shooting 400 yards man. good luck. p.s. my bud just put a stainless scope on his stainless rifle and it looks terrible. to much stainless i find. i like the matte black as i find the gloss finish is a little to much glare

Metalman:
I think your new rifle "probably" has Leupold rings. A 40mm Objective lens scope requires a medium high mount. You can go to this link, select your rifle and select one of the Leupold scopes for a particular diameter Objective Lens. Model doesn't matter for this purpose. Hit select and it will tell you the model # of the rings you need and the model # should be on your rings, assuming we're talking Leupold.

Hope this help you:

I would recommend a quality coated glass, 2x-7x 32. You'll get plenty of light.
I have, on my hunting rifles, only one scope that is higher magnification than 2x-7x. It's a 3x-9x 40 that I put on my foul, extremely overcast, foggy weather 30-06. The rest are 4x 32, 1x-4x 20, 2x-7x 32. I don't like having a big wart sticking up off the top of my tools.

RE Saco scope recommendations

Thanks all for the input. The Sako 75 showed up and the mounts are Sako made 1" low rings which means it will take a scope whose objective maximum diameter is 55-63 mm. I have shopped around and have decided on the Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10 x 44, which appears to give me a balance between weight, size, light gathering and magnification range.

Metalman:
What you said didn't sound right at first read, I had to check, sorry for doubting you. Those low rings will take a very large objective lens, Thumbs up

I thought the same thing, Hammer until I looked at your link. My Leupold rings give me a 1/16th-1/8th inch clearance at the most with my 40mm objective lens. Those Sako rings take a large scope!

My best friend bought the 3-9 Zeiss Conquest. As much as I tried to like it (being Zeiss, and all) I was very disappointed! The upper end Zeiss is fine glass, but the Conquest..... please look closely! I tried and tried, but it was fuzzy. I would strongly recommend the Leupold VX-III over the Conquest every time!

Just my opinion.

I've owned a few Conquests and none of them have been "fuzzy", not even close. I've compared them directly with a couple of VX-III's I bought and from an optical standpoint the Leupolds simply are not quite as good. There are other features about the VX-III's I do like better, however, like the size, weight, tube shape, turret caps, etc...
