Scope powers????

I posted this in teh Elk forum also, but I wanted to make sure I covered all the bases.

OK now that I've decided what kind of gun I'm getting (Remington 700 LSS in .300 win mag) I need to decide on my scope power. I've decided on the Nikon Buckmasters scope, which comes in 3-9 X 40 and 4.5-14 X 40. What I like about the 4.5-14 X 40 is that it has adjusment for parallax. Is this not as necessary with a 3-9? I want to be proficient out to 400 yds. Is the 3-9 powerful enough or would the 4.5-14 be more beneficial? Again, thanks in advance.

I think 3-9X should be all you will ever need. I have a Leupold 3-9X40 on my 300 RUM and I have yet to pop it past 5X except at the rifle range.

How do you like that 300UM? Is it a good gun? My friend is interested in that caliber! I have a 3-9 on my 300 WBY.

I love the 300 RUM. Mine is the Remington Sendero SF and it is very accurate. I have used only factory loads but just got the dies for reloading the round. I'm not sure that I can improve on the accuracy of the factory rounds much. We shall see.

To specifically answer your question (this means I am keeping my opinions to myself):
Yes the 3-9x is powerful enough. The reason the 4.5-14x has AO is that it is intended for long range shooting at relatively high magnification where parallax can become an issue. The 3-9x is set for parallax at 100 yards at the factory. That is close enough for shooting elk with a scope set to 9x.

The higher magnification would be beneficial at the longer ranges. That is a tradeoff b/c you might find yourself with a 'scope full of elk' if you come across one up close and personal with a scope that only goes down to 4.5x.
BTW, had you mentioned a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x40AO Heavy duplex I would have mentioned I have one I'd part with for $400 + S&H
Good luck with your new rifle!
