New to the boards and hunting, so I have a question I have not been able to find an answer to. I'm about to purchase a savage .308, but I'm not sure about ammo. I know that I can buy rounds for a .308, but I've heard I can also buy them for a .30-30 or .30-06 because they're all .30 cal rifle. Is this true? Also, if it is, why would a .308 be a .30 cal if it has the 8?

First of all welcime to the forums you'll find a lot of answers here to any question that you would like to ask.
Now for some answers and questions for you. Is the rifle that you are buying a .308? You can find the answer on the barrel near the action. It will tell you what type of ammo to use in it. If it is a .308 Whinchester then that is the type of ammo to buy and nothing else. The .308 gets its name from the diameter of the bore of the rifle witch is .308" in diamater and was developed in 1952 and was adopted into the military in 1954 as the 7.62mm NATO round. Now for the other rounds that you mentioned the .30-30 is a rifle round that was delveloped for the model 94 Whinchester lever action rifle in 1895. The name came from it being a .30 caliber bullet loaded with 30 grains of black powder originaly. The .30-06 came around in 1906 hence the .30 for the caliber and 06 for 1906 and is a larger case than the 308 Whinchester. While they are all .308 caliber they are all different cases and should be fired only in rifles built for them. If you get to looking around you will find a lot more calibers or rifle rounds that also are 30 caliber or .308 diamater for the bullet. Just off of the top of my head they are 30 M1 Carbine, 7.62x39 witch is a Russian round for the AK47 and SKS automatic wepons, .300 Savage, .30-40 Krag, .300 H&H Magnum, .308 Norma Magnum, 300 Whinchester Magnum, 300 Weatherby Magnum along with a few more out there.
So as you can see there are a lot of different .308 caliber rounds out there it is just that the manufactures shortened the caliber designation from .308 to 30 to make things a lot simpler on themselfes.

same bullet, different cartridge
the .308 Win, .30-06 Springfield and the 300 Winchester Magnum all use the exact same bullet (caliber and OD diameter). But as already stated - they are each very different cartridges with different cases and different rifle chamber sizes and pressure requirments. Never use them interchangeably!!
Not sure about the .30-30, it's a 30 caliber bullet, that much I know of, but I'm not exactly sure what the exact OD diameter size is. I don't reload for .30-30

The 30-30, as stated above is also a 30 caliber bullet so it is also .308". The only difference is that if it is being used in a lever action rifle flat nose bullets have to be selected because of being loaded in the tube.
