San Juan Forest - Wheeled Vehicle Use

Guys,

Can someone simplify for me the regulations regarding vehicle use - 4wd trucks, 4 wheelers. etc, in the San Juan Forest?

I am flying out in September - so I will have neither of these - we will be in a rental car - but I was wondering what to expect as it relates to trucks and/or 4 wheelers in the area?

Thanks,

Jim

Depends

Depends on the specific trails.  There are trails that are open to ATV usage outside the wilderness areas, otherwise, just about anywhere you can legally go with an ATV, you can go with a truck.  Although, on some "trails", listed as 4WD or jeep trails you might wish you wish you were actually on an ATV.

What you will find is that

What you will find is that the san juans don't have alot of roads and the country can be rough.  You don't have to go in the wilderness to gain solitude there is alot of country down there.  If you want you can pm me and I can give you some good places that will get you into some elk.

That's for sure and if he

That's for sure and if he wants to "get away from it all" he can always take a hike into the Weimnuche Wilderness area north of Pagosa Springs.  I was in there in 1980 and if you want to talk about some rough country, LOL!
