Rut in Kansas?

I went out yesterday, all day it it was an odd day. I saw 12 does and they were just out for a leisurely walk. Not being chased. Only saw one 4 pt buck that did chase a doe. This was all in the morning and then nothing in the afternoon.

I was surrounded by does, but no bucks. Seemed odd to me. Thought the does should be attracting more bucks.

I was wondering the same thing. Plus the trail cam pics really don't show the swollen neck on an 8 point and 6 point buck just taken in the last few days.

Full blown rut where i've been Yes Seen 4 big fellas this weekend and they all were with does. Doe groups I have been seeing are broken up. Had a buck destroy my decoy last night, and had 3 bucks come to what was left of it this morning. I really like this time of the year Big smile

How long does the rut usually last, im hoping it is still running during firearms season as my buck tag is good for that season.

The does I've seen have been in groups, relaxed without a care and no bucks. Getting ready to go out as I write this - maybe this morning will be different.

d3- the main action will last about 10 days. good chance during rifle season the "second rut" may be happening Think

CVC - Your activity is bound to explode at any time. If it doesn't seem like there is much activity happening soon, the buck to doe ratio may off in that area Think Start shooting those does Yes

I'm glad I stumbled across this post. I'm pretty new to deer hunting. I have been sitting long hours in the woods on my spots and have only been seeing does and small spike or 4 point bucks for the most part. On Nov 7th I did rattle in a young 10 pointer right at dusk but he didn't stay long. The very next night on a different spot I called in a nice 10 and he had a real nice 8 with him. They were really tolerating each others company pretty well. They both were making scrapes as it got dark (out of range ofcourse) within 75 yards of each other. I have seen numerous groups of does and I keep thinking that one of these mornings they are going to have a buck in tow with them but they haven't yet. I have some nice trail cam pics from Nov 6th of a real nice mature buck in one of his scrapes but that is in the middle of the night and I have yet to see him within shooting hours. I keep thinking its going to kick in any minute. Good forum.

Thanks for having me. I've been looking for a forum for a while that has some guys in it from Kansas. I live in Topeka and hunt primarily in Wabaunsee County. I've had some close encounters this season already with big deer but for some reason or other just haven't been able to close the deal. It seems that most of my encounters start off with me seeing a big deer at about 5 pm about 200 yards from me and it taking him 30 minutes to get to me. Heck, by that time it's too dark for me to do anything. Like I said I'm really only a second year deer hunter. I've shot three does already and am just waiting for things to get started. I have the luxury of being able to hunt Sat and Sun and am also off on Wednesdays so I keep thinking my diligence will pay off. Like I tell my buddy, you can't kill one if you're at the house.

Nice buck there , hope you get a crack at him Thumbs up Do you keep seeing him in the same spot at 200yds? If you do, try and setup closer to where you are seeing him. Is he responding to your rattling or grunts?
