Rifle question?

I'm getting back into hunting after many, many, years off, so I feel like a beginner. I ran across a couple of tips on protecting the bore of your rifle while hunting but can't find them again. One tip was to use a piece of black tape to cover the end of the barrel and they said you didn't have to remove it before shooting because the air in the barrel being pushed out by the bullet would cause it to blow off. This sounds logical. Someone else used something like a ballon or something but as I said I can't find these tips. Anyone want to fill me in on details? Thanks

The black tape works and they even make some things that resmemble.....well.....mini.....ummmm......let's just call them mini latex roll ons that are made for muzzleloaders that would work as well.

With that being said what are you anticipating hunting in that you feel you need this? Most guys go to great lenghts to keep powder dry in smoke poles but in rifles as long as you have the bore properly oiled there are very few conditions I would worry about things getting in your barrel unless you are hunting in a down pour or in very thick brush.

I am planning on strapping my riffle to my pack, I plan on leaving well before first light and may have to go through thick brush, point is, my barrel will be pointing up and was always taught to go to great lenghths to keep any and all foriegn material from entering the business end of your gun even a little moisture. Thank you for the reassurance on the blak tape. I hate to believe EVERYTHING I read unless more than 1 person agrees.

Rifle question?

Last year I black taped my muzzleloader barrel while hunting and had no problem shooting my bull and buck in this mode. My uncle who advised me to do this has done it for years with rifles with no problems.

So what is recomended, electrical tape cut to the shape of a circle the diameter of the barrel? Duct tape? I am assuming it's best not to take a strip and fold it over onto either side of the barrel.

I just take a strip of electrical tape and fold it over the barrel. The pressure will break it before anything bad happens.

Lost a ramrod once, so I usually tape the barrel and my ramrod on the smokepole, have shot 1 elk and many whitetails this way. no problemo. Rifle barrels too....

I have always covered the end of the barrel with tape. I have shot lots of animals with the taped barrel and no issues at all.

I use cheap green ballons to cover the end of my barrel when hunting in the rain. I have tested these at the range and they don't affect accuracy.
I understand that solders used condoms in Vietnam for the same reason---to keep their barrels from becoming wet in the rain.
Anyway, it works.
