Rifle permit question.

Hi, I'm 18 and looking to get into hunting. I was wondering, if i were to complete the 10hour course and get a permit, I would still have to get a NYS rifle license permit correct?

The rifle permit is for ages 21 and older. So if my dad were to get a license permit, am I able to use the rifle he purchased?

It states that he has to carry the permit with him while in possession of the rifle. So can he sit in the car as I drive upstate with the rifle. Then I take it out and shoot with it while I'm in the field and he is sitting in the car or something? Or does he have to always be with it no matter where it goes?

He has back problems and cannot be out in the woods with me.

First of all, welcome to the

First of all, welcome to the site!  Stick around for awhile, and be sure to throw up some stories and photos of your hunts!!!

There is a guy named Mike on here, that is very familiar with New York hunting.  I am sure he will see this, and hopefully give you a response.  I grew up hunting across the lake in Vermont, and this is actually the first I have heard of anything like this.  There, once you pass the hunters safety course, you just buy a hunting license.  Never heard of a rifle permit.

I know New York has some funky gun laws, especially when compared to Vermont which has almost none.  Hopefully you will get things straight and have a great season!

I was a bit confused as well

I was a bit confused as well but I have bo knowledge of how things work back there. Here in Colorado we don't have very many limitations at all yet but I know that every state is different. Hopefully like was mentioned Mike should be able to give you some very good information if he sees this. You might even consider sending hima pm as he has always been helpful.

I'm wondering if there are some city permits being talked about here as opposed to the entire state in general?

Welcome to BGH and hopefully you are successful in your quest to get into this great sport. It will provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment.

Never heard of one

Well I am from NY and have never heard of a "rifle permit"?  Still the auther here is from New York City.  In truth many who live more than 2 states away from "The Empire State" think that the whole thing is one big city.  Even so, the city is definetly it's own little world and I would not be put out to hear that they demand (want you to BUY) a "rifle permit".

That is funny how that

That is funny how that happens.  I lived near what I consider "Upstate" New York, right across from Rouses Point (Canadien border).  However, if you live in the city, everything more than an hour or so out of the city is considered "upstate". lol

By the 10 hour course I

By the 10 hour course I presume that you are talking about a hunter or gun safety course that you are required to take.  Go ahead and take the course and ask your question to the instructor and they should be able to answer your question.

rifle permit?

I've been out of NY for a while but it sounds like you're describing the NYS pistol permit. The age is 21 for that and it needs to be in your possesion when carrying. Unless it's something specific to the city or surrounding counties, as others have mentioned.

You could call Hillary and ask her...maybe she knows?
