I'm a little curious about this. I am most likely recieving an assignment soon and may be getting stationed in NY. My wife is from the lower portion of the state, and there, I've hunted white tail with shotgun. But, are there area's in upper NY that allow rifles? If so, do these area's have large public area's, or would I have to find private land owner's who allow hunting? She has family and friends all over the state, but most don't hunt and those that do use shotgun. Thanks,

Yes, they are authorized in the notrthern part of the state. There are some areas in the southern tier, a little closer to the population centers, that are shotgun only, I believe. But, up north, you're good to go.

Northern Zone is all rifle and a good hunk of the southern zone is now rifle friendly. Every year the Gov seems to sign up more rifle zones in what was always shotgun only

and there is enough public hunting ground in northern N.Y. that you better take a compass. you can go 25 miles and never come to a road
