Rifle For Bear Hunting...............Caliber?

I'm looking to purchase a new rifle for Black Bear hunting & would also use the same rifle for Deer hunting and would like some advice on what caliber you guys recomend?

I'm leaning towards a 30/06 but I'm also considering a 308 or 7mm.................

Any advice is much appreciated...................

Bassrat,

all three are good rounds. I would go with the cailber that comes in the model rifle you want and whichever one has easy access to the ammo you want to shoot.

I purchased a 308 many years ago, because that was the rifle I wanted and the 308 can handle the game I pursue.

The above answer is great. I would add buy the one you can and will shoot well and often. The .06 is a great all around.
I use a .270 for deer/bear/elk.

I Don't know how or where you plan to hunt. My preference is for calibers larger than .30 caliber because I choose not to shoot bears under 300 pounds.
There is a good article on

What grain bullet do you shoot out of your 270??

I've got my eye on the new Remington 700 SPS "Buckmaster Edition" & it does come in the 270 as well as 30/06. Do you feel one has an advantage over the other?

I will continue to go on record as saying I DO NOT like the 270 for bears. I like the .280 and the 30-06 as all 3 basically share the same case but I find the 270 just doesn't give you that large exit hole needed for bears. That exit hole is needed for blood letting to help tracking. Other than that, any decent velocity 30 cal is fine for bear and deer. You're gonna hear the, 'yeah, but I know a guy who shot 800 or so bears with one shot.........blah blah blah' but I never seem to have that guy around when I'm out tracking past midnight because he or his 270 didn't do the job.

The .30-06 is very accurate, ammo is plentiful, and the larger cartridges have the knock down you want. If you wanted to spend the extra money, you can also get the accelerators for varmint. This would be a great rifle to have too if you enter and happen to win the NH moose lotto.

I know exactly what you are saying.....I have seen the same thing from guys shooting 300+super/mag/cannons.. Guys that either don't know their weapon, are scared of it or scared of the bears. (Usually these guys also carry large sidearms as well)
It is all about shot placement and knowing when not to shoot. I have killed 14 bears (up to 400+lbs) with my .270, my wife and brother have also killed bears with my rifle. When available, I always take a second shot but that shot has never been the difference between the bear getting away. I would do this even with a larger caliber.

I have shot bears with 130/140/150 grns. I prefer 150 grns, but sometimes them bears show up when I am deer hunting so they get 130 grns..

I got a question on the neg answer to the 270 but positive on the 280. How much difference is there between a 150gr bullet out of either? You should not blame a cartridge for bad bullet selection!

On the point of "size of exit holes" there is very good reason why bullet makers never say "my bullet mushrooms better than your bullet". Somebody ,might ask them to prove it, and it can't be done, not even with ballistic gel. Too many variables even under the most stringent lab conditions , let alone any animal.
That is also why mushroom"expanded" diameter measurements are not mentioned
The 270(.277 dia bullet compared to the 280(284 dia), a difference of .007 inch( that's seven thousandth of an inch Folks) and has no bearing whatsoever on diameter of exit wounds, which has to be bigger than bullet diameter if the projectile exspands at all.

Good info guys, thanks a bunch!

I think I'm going to go with the 30/06, I think I will have alot of confidence shooting this caliber. I think I will go with a 180 grain bullet.

Has anybody shot the Federal Bear Claw bullet??
