I'm not so much Republican as I am conservative. Lately, I've been voting Republican because it's the lesser of two evils. I voted for McCain, but was holding my nose the whole time.

As far as I'm concerned, a Republican who has the support of Democrats isn't doing conservatives any favors. Democrats loved McCain because they knew Dems wouldn't vote for him because he was Republican, and Republicans wouldn't vote for him because he carried the ball for the other team too much.

I might be more willing to believe the "bipartisan" rhetoric if I saw one iota of bipartisanship from the Democrats. But instead, all I'm seeing from them is "We won -- deal with it." I don't see them reaching across the aisle, and criticism is dealt with viciously.

IMO, Republican resurgency hinges on rediscovering their core principles of small government and individual liberty. Apparently the Democrats do as well, because anyone that can articulate such things bears the full onslaught of every attack the Dems can generate. What they want is weak Republicans who won't put up a fight or ask embarrassing questions.

If the swing to the right doesn't happen soon, it'll happen over the next few years. Americans are generally a patriotic lot, and while we may feel guilty from time to time, we like to feel good about our country. People will get tired of the constant apologies and seeing their leaders constantly approaching our enemies with weakness. I figure that after a few years of foreign policy losses and high inflation associated with printing all that money, the pendulum will swing back to the right.

We elected Carter because we were tired of Nixon -- but after four years of Carter's embarrassing policies the pendulum swung hard right and we got Reagan. The pendulum swing is inevitable -- it's just a question of when. That's why I say you ought to be careful about limits on speech, Pogo. You can't have yin without yang, and if you establish a precedent that allows one group to suppress free speech, it'll eventually be turned against you.
