Reports from the Field

Just about a month into bow season here in Georgia and I finally saw some deer.  Bad news was they were on the road I was using to get to the stand I wanted to hunt from for the afternoon.  Counted 5 deer.  Have to hunt the time I have but man I can't catch a break.  How about this wind pattern we have been having?  I've been using my climber lately just to deal with the NE and ENE wind directions.  Most of the club stands are set up for that NW wind direction.  And for the rest of Bow season the wind is projected to be that NE wind.  I've been giving thought to hunt with the Bow all deer season long since I have so much money invested in it.  Sure would hate to see the big boy at 60yrd or more and only have a bow in hand.  Actually, if I think about it my daughter or son will be with me during rifle season anyway.  It’s all over in a week for me bad winds or not I need to get it done. Help!

You're right Swisher, if you

You're right Swisher, if you only have a week, you definately need to get it done!!!! I am sure you will though.  It only takes on evening for the wind to change, and you'll start seeing deer come from every direction.  Even if the weather is predicting a bad wind, stick with it.

Or, out of curiosity, since you have a climber, could you move it to the other side of the trails?  I am sure you thought of that, but just wondering.  That, or maybe set up a ground blind?

What are they focusing on right now?  Any food plots or anythign they are hitting?  That's the benefit of having a climber, is you can move to where the deer are, within reason.  Anyway, good luck, and keep us updated!

One day I did go in with

One day I did go in with intentions of using a buddy’s climber.  I brought mine instead.  It was so hot.  I think the temp was 92 and I hiked in with that climber from a distance.  I set it up and was just sweating everywhere.  Abandoned, it and called it a day until other friend hunting sent a txt asking that I don't leave without him because his truck was acting up.  So I just climbed into a ground blind tucked into the pines.  Coyote scat right next to blind like right on the corner.  I could smell a pungent scent.  Well when I got into it I figured it out.  Coyotes have been marking up on the tent.  Piss smell all in it.  It was awful.  I sat in it anyway.  LOL.  With the piss and sweat hot air waiting.  I swear if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any.

Seeing Game just the wrong kind

Well I sat in a stand that sets up well for the wind last night.  I hadn't used it since opening day.  Deer definitely moving through there and the trail cutting through pines is beat down to sand leading to the giant persimmon tree on the road.  Still has fruit on it when I walked bye.  So I thought this would be a good set up with the wind really blowing.  Oh brother.  The tree is a bit skinny for the 22ft ladder stand with a big 255 pounded like me.  I tighten down the strap on the tree made sure my harness was secure and gingerly sat down.  I'm not afraid of height but I must say I was a bit nervous up there.  Then the tree was swaying this cant be good.  I thought if I could ride this out like one of the Georgia Fair rides my daughter talks me into going on every year I would survive and just at sunset the wind will stop.  Well I couldn't take it.  I got back down and headed for a two man stand further in this group of hardwoods.  I got settled in and the wind was awful.  Right over my right back shoulder.  All I could do was sit and wait for sunset on the chance something would walk down a trail out in front and turn to over me a shot.  NOT THE CASE.  that would be a perfect world. lol.  Nope.  Nothing.  So I'm headed down and just lowered my bow.  When I here commotion coming up the draw.  6 Coyotes.  Unbelievable. Then went right bye me without even noticing.  Hooked around my stand and headed up the game trail.  They didn't get far into the pine when they started the yipping and howling.  Unnerving. I had to walk in the dark with that pack in the area where my truck was sitting.  Wish I had my Marlin 30/30 lever action.  I bet I could have at least got two before they scattered.

Foiled again

Have to hunt when you have the time right.  So I went in the wind and rain.  I was walking back to the truck looking in the pines for bedded deer.  I scuffed my boot on the road and thought "Come on you know the rule hunt all the way to the truck" and I kept going.  Scuff scuff... "SWISHER Wake up"  Just then a deer no more than 15ft off the road and side I was on got up from its bed and jumped off.  My truck was 30 yards away.  FOILED AGAIN!  I kept going and turned right to my truck and kept walking down the road on the chance that deer may cross in front of me.  Nope.  Went home for some hot chocolate and soup.  Cold and Wet Weekend.  I'm an Elmer. lol
