At 400 yds, have you also considered the 270 WSM? Might be an interesting 3rd option for you to consider.

As for Rem vs. Browning, it's all about personal preference. Both make a fine product. I happen to have a Browning .30-06 and would probably look at Browning first if I were in the market for another rifle. I tend to like the fit and finish of the Browning a bit better than Remington. I also like to BOSS option.

However, if you're asking who makes the better rifle, then I'd answer neither. They're pretty equivalent performers. Browning rifles might be a bit more expensive, which would make Rem the better value, possibly.

What is BOSS and how does it work??

i have both a browning and a remington . both are .270 and have a muzzle break on them . ihave taken both deer and elk up to three hundred yards away with the remington but hunt with the browning now .

A BOSS system is a muzzle brake that is fitted to your rifle to reduce felt recoil.

One more thing... Bolt action vs gas operated autoloader such as the browning "Bar Short Track" rifle. are the gas operated rifles accurate as the bolt action?
what are the pros and cons?

Bolt action rifles are more accurate, more dependable and by far the easiest to inspect and clean.

In my opinion, the only pro's a gas operated semi-auto rifle offers are signifigant reduction in felt recoil to the shooter, and the ability to get off a secondary shot much quicker without losing sight of your target if the first shot misses. I can't think of any other pro's for semi-autos.

My advise is to learn to shoot a good simple bolt action rifle proficiently. You'll be better off for it. Yes, you as the shooter will absorb all of the recoil, but a bolt action is a more stable and accurate platform. The calibers you've been looking into don't kick the shooter that much, but still may take some getting used to. Go with bolt action for hunting.
