rem 700 barrel switch

I have a 700 ADL in .270 win
I want to interchange a 30-06 barrel for cheap FMJ surpluss ammo and for more varity in bullet weight.
Since the cases are the same eccept for the neck and should, do I have to change anything but the barrel. Remington says the action needs to be changed and only they can do it, but I'm scheptical.
any advice or thoughts on why anything but the barrel would have to be changed
thanks

I am pretty sure the action from the 270 would not work on a 30-06 cartridge.I would listen to the people who make guns they might know what they are talking about.

I know i should listen to what they said. just tryin to learn some stuff and see if switching caliber could be realy simple to do at home. I won't actually do this. unless I took it to a gunsmith

You could always send it off to a custom gunmaker, depending on what your budget is, and they could get the new action for your gun and bed it and everything. I believe the 30-06 needs a slightly larger bolt-face than a 270.

The action and bolt can have either barrel but not interchangable.
Same action. Same bolt face. You do not need a new action or bolt for a 30-06.
You will need to have it head spaced by a gunsmith. Otherwise the cases will separate or jam. Could be fatal.
The 270 is just a hair longer than the 30-06. The chambers are cut into the barrel.
DO NOT fire the rifle if the barrel/chamber has not been properly head spaced to the bolt, each and every time a barrel is set in the action. There is no way of setting the barrel to the exact same spacing when it is screwed in.
Not a good idea. Unless you feel that 2 thumbs and 8 fingers are too many.

There are better ways of doing what you have in mind.
H&R/NEF makes a single shot that can be set up with about 15 different barrels on one action.
The rifle barrels run about $40 to $85
Shotgun about $40 to $60.
Go to the H&R site. They will explain how to go about it.

thanks for the info, the head spacing problem is more along the lines of what i was looking for why i shouldn't just switch out the barrel

The 270 is a fine round. You can pick up another rifle in 30-06 to fire surplus ammo a lot cheaper than setting a new barrel and have the best of both worlds.
The 30-06 is a very common round. Checkout the small gun shops. They always have a variety of good used rifles on consignment that are ready to shoot.
