Recommended areas in Vermont for Wall Tent Basecamp and Rifle Deer Hunting Season

Hi,

New to these forums but have a lot of experience Elk Hunting out west. Is there an area that anyone recommends that I can set up my wall tent and basecamp out of it in the Vermont Wilderness to hunt the deer rifle season?

Thanks,

Whoa, that's a toughy..... You'll find out, if you haven't already, that alot of Vermont is private land.  Hunting the Green Mountain NP or the wilderness area can be done, but I am not sure about  setting up a "base camp".  Most guys I know will just start their hike each day from their car/camper and head into the woods or up the mountains.

Best of luck to you.  I may make it back for the opener this year.

Tent Camp

Yes, there is a lot of private land up there but I could camp low impact. Hoping to be closer to where the action is without having to hike in so far every morning, that's all. Good luck to you if you make it up this season.

Camp Hunting

I talked today to the forest Ranger for a district in Vermont and you are absolutely allowed to tent camp/hunt in the national forest. They ask that you practice low impact techniques. Guess it's going to happen in November!

Hi king, and welcome.

If you are interested in crossing over to New York state the Adirondacks have millions of acres.    Jim

NEK?

You might be able to find somewhere in the Northeast Kingdom to set up a camp. There's a whole lot of nothing in some places. I can't give you a specific location because I haven't tried to do what you want to do. Good Luck!

Northeast Kingdom

That's a good suggestion. Not familiar with the terrain. Looking for a few grassy meadows and maybe a few water sources. Hope that I can translate our experiences out West into a winning combo here.

Thanks!

hmmmmm

Vermont is VERY different from out west. Water sources are not generally an attractant....it's everywhere. Grassy meadows are usually on farms. What you'll tend to find are a lot of woods. If you hunt in areas where they've been logging you'll find clearcuts and secondary growth. There also lot's of swamps....ooops...I mean "wetlands". You'll want to find food sources. Old orchards and other good browse. Hardwood ridges with lots of mast. Deer hunting in VT is pretty different than elk hunting out west. I've hunted elk and mulies out west for 15 years and it's definitely a different type of hunt. When I'm in CO I need to keep reminding myself I'm not deer hunting in New England. Up here I move more slowly since deer don't tend to range too far and the cover is much different. In elk country there often large areas that don't hold elk so I need to move through them quicker to get to the good stuff. Up here the deer can be anywhere so you have to work a little slower. Good luck this fall!

Yeah, what NH hunter said.

Yeah, what NH hunter said.  Vermont is basically green and wet.  The northeast kingdom is very vast wilderness, with little population.  Lots of swamps, woodsy type areas.  Some mountains mixed in.  Run into alot of moose up there too.  Not as many deer, but the ones you find would tend to be bigger bucks.
