reccommendations for two way radios

What's the best good priced radios? I've used some in the $100 a pair or less range with mixed results and so far can't count on them to work when needed.

I don't want to spend a fortune but will pay for range and reliability. The older my dad gets I would like to be able to check in once in awhile.

Thanks for the suggestions.

recommendations for two way radios

Personally, I prefer Midlands.  I've had a lot better luck with them than Motorolas.  Both have a lot of ready-made accessories for them like microphones, headsets, etc, which IMO is important vs other brands.  But between the two, it seems to me that I get better range with the Motorolas.  Just remember that you're not going to get the range they put on the box.
