Has anyone tried it? One of my brother-in-laws has brought in a buck with them. Is there any difference in technique between rattling for them and for whitetails?

I doubt if it would work since most mule deer hunting seasons are not while they are rutting. I have see a few people try it with no luck.

It all depends on the location of the unit that you are hunting in. From what I have seen some may be starting the rut in the 4th season but usually they will start a week or two later closer to Thanksgiving.

there are only 3 rut hunts in oregon, havent drawn those tags yet, so i havent tried rattleing a mulie

My bro-in-law brought one in
My bro-in-law brought one in during archery season a couple years ago. The buck very recently rubbed his velvet off so I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

Curiosity or maybe he thought he was a stud and wanted to assert himself? I never ever thought about trying the early part of the season.
