Question on kill range for coyotes.

I'll be hunting coyotes for the first time this Spring with a 12 gauge, and wanted to know a little more about the "kill zone".
If I'm using a #2 shot (12 gauge), what is the approximate minimum distance effective for killing a coyote (in yards)?
This is a totally new hunt for me, and I thought some of you coyote shootin' vets would have some good advice.
Thanks.

Question on kill range for coyotes.

Think you mean maximum distance. I don't use shotgun for yotes, but I would think 50 - 60 yds will be your effective max. range.

Question on kill range for coyotes.

You gotta pattern your shotgun brother. What choke are you using? If improved cylinder 15 twenty yards might be max. Modified a little further and full choke should give you your longest kill range. Second thing don't use the steel shot as it loses velocity quickly limiting range. Lead is best if you can get it or the new Heavy shot. Lead BB to # 4 buck shot should be good. Double 00 buck doesn't hold enough pellets IMO to give effective kills past twenty yards. I think #2 shot is too small unless range was very close like ten twelve yards.

Back to patterning set out a target large enough like a piece of cardboard at twenty, then thirty, then forty, yards or more and after shooting see if your pattern is holding together enough to give a clean kill.

I use a Mossberg 500 with a twenty inch full choked barrel and 3 inch mag lead bb shot. After pattering it, I only feel confident out to thirty, thirty five, yards. With a longer barrel and the Dead Coyote (very, very, very expensive) you may get out to that fifty or more yard mark. I believe with a shotgun sixty would be max though.

I do like Les Johnson and pack both my Mossberg for close work and my 22-250 for long work.

Hope this helps.

Question on kill range for coyotes.

Thanks for the replies.
Whatever I end up choosing, I will be somewhat limited as #2 shot is the requirement for coyote shooting where I live (as far as a 12 gauge goes).
I'd love to be using a 223, 222, 204, 22-250 or the like, but I don't have that kind of money to buy a gun for a few shots...if I'm lucky enough to get a shot.
Thanks again, guys. Thumbs up
