The data is coming in slowly, but I now know that the land in question is in Curry County, OR. Does this help clarify anything?
Curry County is in Southwestern Oregon on the California border and the Pacific Ocean. California has little or no Elk hunting but it does have Elk. Elk hunting can be good in this area as it is lightly populated although it does have Coos Bay to the north with an area population of around 100,000 people: a prized hunt is the Tioga unit just north of there. The Rogue River flows through this area and it also has one of the largest roadless areas in the US. Get good maps and a GPS unit if you go in there. Many people have gotten lost or worse in that area. The coast is beautiful there and the climate is milder than the rest of the state giving it a "Banana Belt" nickname.
Welcome to BGH Slayvid.
I'd get into this but haven't hunted in a few years. Animals numbers around here really low, birds almost all gone. Everything I hear the coast is the place to be for elk.
Hey, Don –
Good to hear from you!
I started this thread because I wanted to get some information on the procedure of getting tagged/permitted for a hunt. The news that the coastal area might be good land for it is encouraging, but...if anyone can give me some specifics on getting a tag to hunt on private property here (and it's pretty big property, from what I was told, about 2000 acres), I'd really like to hear more about that.
Thanks, everyone.
all the units in Curry Co. are controlled-hunt units for rifle elk
which means you would have had to put in for the draw by the deadline (which usually is May 15, but this year was June 1)
there are several options, with different dates, and in some cases different point restrictions, and one that is a Curry Co. private land cow tag
but, whether you hunt on public or private land, you'll still need to go through this process (most tags are good on both public and private land - within a specific boundary)
the only other option is an archery tag, which is over the counter (and there are different point restrictions for these, too)
I hope this helps - sorry I didn't see it before the deadline
Glad to hear from big Don who hasn't hunted in a few years to call me ignorant . I am sure that central oregon hermit knows better than I who hunted there last year. Yo Don! we were talking about ELK not birds!
Hunting on the eastern units are all controlled tags and the coast and cascade units have general season tags.
Very true if you are rifle hunting... Archery is a little different and I don't think it has been said if you are rifle hunting or archery hunting yet... just my $.02
Have a wealth of knowledge on the Tioga unit in southwest OR, specifaclly the SE part of the unit, been hunting there 15yrs in a row. If anyone has info on OTC Elk hunting in CO, preferably around unit 42,43,421 I would be willing to trade secrets!
Thanks
