Oregon has two types of elk seasons - General and Controlled. Controlled hunts are on a lottery draw - some easy to draw, others requiring lots of preference points. There are six different General seasons that are over-the-counter purchases. The same arrangement applies to bow seasons - General and Controlled. Specific dates for these General seasons are posted on the Oregon Dept of Fish and Wildlife web site.

For the limited hunts, Most years the applications ahve to be in by May 15th. (i think they extend it a little this year because the system went down.

If you have access to Private land, the landowners often have tags available through the Land owner preference program. If not, you are back to applying or hunting a general tag. are you looking at Archery or Rifle?

This would be a rifle hunt. It's kind of a long shot (so to speak)...a new friend of mine, has a friend in OR with a fair amount of land and a herd of ~30 elk that run through it. We were hoping to hunt on this land, but don't know the legal ins and outs of OR. If it has to be planned well in advance, we're probably in "wait til next year" mode.

Depends on which side of the state and how much land they have. Basically anything eastside of mountains, you have to apply for or have LOP tags. I think the Assignability of LOP tags depends on how much acreage you own.

You can get an LOP tag with 40 acres but for some reason i think you cant assign unless its 160.

Of course then you have to talk the landowner into giving up one to you.

I hunted an over the counter rifle season near Diamond Lake a few years back, on public property. Saw some elk, just never any with bone on their heads....

Just to let you know Oregon has very different climates so where you hunt can mean a lot. The Coast Range on the west has Roosevelt Elk which are bigger than the Rocky Mountain Elk found east of the Cascade Range. Hunting on the eastern units are all controlled tags and the coast and cascade units have general season tags. Eastern units are generally more open in regards to trees and underbrush with a drier climate while the west units are in a rainforest and generally mountainous terrain with heavy brush unless it has been recently logged. Douglas firs grow about a foot a year and the reprod areas can get real dense. Eastern units can be flat or mountainous, ranging from sagebrush plains to Pine and Tamarack forests.
