Pumped for NM Unit 22 Elk Archery!!!

Heading to Unit 22 for late September archery elk hunt. I was wondering if anhyone had hunted this area? We intend to pack in 7+ miles on horseback into the area that was formerly 22B and hunt on foot from there. We are looking at setting up base camp on a spring around Black Mountain.

Anyone done this gig before? ANY info would be extremely appreciated but some particular questions we have:

Will we likely find elk at the higher or lower elevations or both? What will drive this?

Any good sources for finding out if particular springs are running?

How rough is this country?

Anyone fished in this area?

Many Thanks!!!

Happy Hunting!!

I have a scouting trip planned to unit 22 and 23 for the weekend of the 11th through the 14th of August but I have never been out that way before. My Father and I put in seprately for the draw figuring only one of us would get drawn but wouldn't you know we both drew tags but in different units. I would greatly appreciate any info on either of these units and I'll have a scouting report to share here in about two weeks. Elk Newbie, it sounds like you have the right idea, everything I have heard so far says to hunt the former 22b wilderness.

DBaileyG,

Good luck on the scouting trip! Maybe you can catch a couple of trout for supper. Have you found anything on the web about previous hunts in 22?

All I found about previous hunts was on a google search for "elk unit 22" and one of the hits was an older forum from about this time last year. Essentially it was someone asking the same questions that we have but for last years hunt. I sent that person an email but have not heard back from them. We also called and talked to the game warden in that area. I hoped to find out some specifics from her but she just sait that they move around alot but that the wilderness area was the best place. The only other info that I found on the web was a tourist type report on the town of Mogollon that said wildlife including elk were abundant in that area and farther up 159. Nice to know but pretty vague. I'll post again when I have more info on unit 22 or on unit 23 for Kentucky girl. I'd still love to hear from anyone that has been up to these units or could recommend a starting point even for scouting. Thanks and good luck to everyone heading to elk country this season! Thumbs up

My apologies to everyone for taking so long to report on my scouting trip to unit 22 and 23 in early August. I've been busy at work but unfortunately most of all I didn't find that much to report on. It rained heavily both days that I was in the area of the two units washing away any sign of tracks that I may or may not have been able to find. Watering holes and any potential wallows were overflowing making it nearly impossible to tell if thay had been used. There was nothing fresh at the edges of these water holes either but that was somewhat to be expected because it had rained so much that the elk could just drink the water off the ground wherever they stood. I couldn't even get to the north side of unit 22 because the rains had washed out road 159. Hopefully it will be opened back up by the time season rolls around but as of yesterday it was still reported to be closed past the town of Mogollon. The only light at the end of the tunnel that I saw was that I did see 8 elk from highway 180 as I was leaving. They were south of Glenwood in unit 23 however they were on private land. Six cows and calves and two young raghorn bulls. Not much but It at least made me feel better having driven all the way to New Mexico and at least seeing an elk. I hope it dries out before season or else we may all be in for a tough sloppy hunt. Good luck and happy hunting to everyone!
