Public land hunting in NW Nebraska

Thinking about heading to NW Nebraska this fall deer hunting and am wondering if anyone there has any pointers, good or bad?

I hunted public land by Valentine a couple years ago and was somewhat disappointed in the amount and quality of public land there.  The NW area seems to have a large amount and we are planning on hunting the area around Chadron, any advice?

Thanks,

Pat

It's good and bad

I really like it, but it's kind of a mad house for the first few days.  If it doesn't bother you, consider not showing up til the Monday or Tuesday after the opener.  Also, Chadron is the biggest town in the area, so you'll have a lot more pressure there.

The good thing is that the hunters aren't hunting some of the King's Canyon area, in the National Forest south of town since the burn about 4 years.  But the deer are using it.

Also Bourdeaux Creek SWA and Chadron Creek SWA aren't too heavily hunted.

But I prefer to hunt closer to Crawford.  I really like the Ponderosa, which is a popular area.  The Bighorn is also becoming more popular, but you won't see many people on the West Side.  And you can hike there from from the west, through the Forest Service.

Anyway, some good hunting, lots of deer, about 60/40 whitetail to mule deer.  I prefer the state lands to the Federal lands, but I'm biased, having worked on those properties.

Thanks, you make it sound

Thanks, you make it sound more appealing that the NC portion of NE.  We don't mind having to hike in to get away from the crowds.

May have to actively pursue it for this fall!

We are 99% sure that we are

We are 99% sure that we are heading to Nebraska for the opener, we have ordered about every map that was available and with those and google earth we are going to start looking for a general area to start our scouting once we get there!  We are planning two days of scouting and three days of hunting!

Good luck. Sometimes going in

Good luck. Sometimes going in comparably blind can make it that much more rewarding if you end up nailing something.
