Private land hunting in Ca

This may be an obvious question to some, but do DFG tag requirements change for private land owners in Ca? I've recently begun looking into purchasing property with a co-worker, and we've found quite a few very appealing listings up in Lassen and Modoc County. Several of the listings we've found fall in the X-zones though. We just started looking and researching recently, and both questioned whether private land owners have any special X-zone tag privileges.

We both have 4 on/4 off work schedules, and are looking for good deer, bear, and upland game land. Obviously we'd like land somewhere we can purchase deer/bear tags on a yearly basis, and not have to try and draw tags for our own property. Anybody know whether private land owners are allowed to obtain X-zone tags regularly, or whether it is still based on the same point system?

I'm no expert, but as far as I know you still have to hunt in season with tags on private land. The animals on your property dont belong to you. Private ranches that you can hunt on year round without tags are "domesticated" animals. They will be farm raised deer, pig, elk, pheasants, etc. and are exempt from game regulations, because they are bought or raised for hunting and "belong" to the ranch.

Thanks for the response, and clearly I'm no expert either! I figured that the same season and tag requirements would apply, but was more wondering if private land owners that fell within certain zones would have any special privileges in receiving tags for that area?

I know the X-zone tags in Ca are done by a yearly draw, and people accumulate points each year. The more points, the higher the likelihood of drawing an X-zone tag. Would be pretty weak to own property in X-zone and only be able to hunt it every 3-5 years.

If that were the case, we'd certainly be checking out other areas where tags are sold over the counter.

As a land owner in CA you won't get special privilages on getting tags. X-Zones you do need points, but the land may qualify for a land owner tag or two. They are not easy to get. Some requirements are, 640 acres minimum, and the owner has to show the deer are a detrament tot the crop or property. If you are looking, look for listings that say, X zone land owner buck tags. I see several listings in Lassen and Modoc counties that are proud to list they have a land owner tag because it becomes a selling point. The catch is unlike other states only the person issued the land owner tag can use it in the state of CA. So it can't be sold. But don't take my word for it confirm with DFG.

Good luck
