Preliminary Massachusetts Shotgun Deer Season Figures
It was a very difficult year out her in Western MA compared to years before. Many usual successful hunters were disappointed this season. I don't know if it is due to a high winter kill last year coupled with an apparent increase in the coyote & black bear population and/or the very strange weather patterns we've had.
It seems that many more hunters were succesful during muzzleloader out here this year and I am anxious to see what the numbers look like for it. I heard of many more large bucks being taken this muzzleloader season than any other at the checking stations. We'll just have to wait and see.
There can be too much of a good thing with antler rattling.
I like to hit the horns together for a good 30- to 40-second rattling sequence and then hang them up and resist the urge to hit them again.
This works to the hunter's advantage, because if a buck has heard it, he may have been 300 or 400 yards away and he comes in and he's not exactly sure where it came from.
When finally is time to rattle again throw a slight change-up into the routine.
The second time, don't rattle as loud...
