poll:what 45-70 do you perfer?

hi
i am not too sure about the two choices you have in your poll. i have a marlin xlr 45/70 it's a nice looking rifle and is designed to take advantage of hornady leaverloution bullets. the sights on it are good and if you are going to put a scope on it cabela's makes a scope with three sets of cross hears so you can be acurate at 2 and 3 hundread yards or at least that is what they say i do not have a scope on mine. i don't really like the action on mine it is not very smooth and is a little sriff

I also have not heard of these guns. Any pics?

Not sure if they make the caliber you're looking for, but I think Henry makes the nicest looking cowboy rifle. May want to check out Danny Glover in Silverado to get the juices flowing. ;)

I've heard about the .45-70 from H&R it is the Handi rifle. I own one in .30-30 and have placed an order for one in .45-70.

yea...a friend of mine has an h&r 444.....i want a 45-70 but the 444 shoots a heck of alot flatter and a little further so im kinda leaning toward this gun....but by the way i have an h&r 243 and it is a very good gun...i would reccomend it for any youth hunter.

Had this Marlin in the blued version a few years ago. It was a good rifle, recoil was not to bad. Took some nice roedeer with it.

The Marlin 1895G is a compact, versatile lever action that will take any game on the planet with the right loads. The lever action is the fastest and most reliable action if you need to take a fast follow up shot on dangerous game. I use mine for white tail in the lower 48 and for all of the big stuff in AK. You can shoot the heaviest loads made including the Garrett Hammerhead 540 gr solids thru this gun without worry.

I topped mine with a 4X32 fixed scope with see thru rings in case the scope is unusable in fast close up shots in heavy brush. Mine is also ported. It helps with muzzle climb when I'm using the big stuff. I have 5 holes drilled at a 45 deg angle on each side of the front sight and two in each side slightly behind those. I am going to extend the magazine ( 7 shot cap) through Brockmans before next season. Mine is blued but there is a stainless version available. I haven't had any problems with mine following many years of very tough hunting adventures.

I used to own a .444 Marlin but found it hard to find ammo sometimes. There are ways to eliminate that problem...maybe I was just too lazy. I like the .45-70 Govt cartridge because of it's versatility. You never worry about having enough gun...and you can always load it lighter...pretty hard to go the other way.

The only drawback to this cartridge is range. I consider 200 yds about the limit for most game. These big bullets drop fast after that...even with the hottest loads. I hunt heavy tamarack swamps and brushy timber so I'm not too worried about shooting to the other side of the canyon...but it is a consideration. I want a bullet that is going to plow through cover and still have knockdown power when it gets there. I don't want my little mach 3 missle being deflected by a blade of grass when I'm staring down Yogi bear. I want to send a dump truck right thru his boiler room. Properly loaded the 1895G will do just that.

Garrett Cartridges and Buffalo Bore have some really good info plus some tables on what you can safely fire thru any rifle chambered for this great old cartridge. They also have links to other places that cater to us .45-70 Govt. cultists. Once you've pulled the trigger on one of these...anything else will seem as though it has "Daisy BB only" stamped on the barrel. Have fun!

Well, being a single shot guy, my 1st choice would be a TC Encore, 2nd would be Rger #1.
If I wanted a Repeater, Marlin would get the nod.
