Pair pays thousands for big game poaching

11:35 AM MST on Tuesday, February 10, 2004

Associated Press

MCCALL -- Two men were ordered jailed and assessed thousands of dollars in penalties for running an illegal big game hunting operation in Valley County.
Sixty-year-old Roger Craddick of Donnelly pleaded guilty to multiple counts of illegal hunting activities.
He was jailed for 30 days and directed to pay over ten thousand dollars in penalties. Craddick lost his hunting privileges for ten years.
Fifty-six-year-old Thomas Ackerman of Boise pleaded guilty to exceeding the limit for elk. He was jailed for 15 days and ordered to pay over 35 hundred dollars in penalties.
Fish and Game Department investigators spent two years investigating the operation.
That included what one of the men called an elk slaughter and coaching on how to take bull elk illegally without being caught.

If they were running a "operation" and coaching others on how to do this, I would of liked to have seen a lot more jail time and a lifetime ban of hunting privileges.

Sure seems what we would like to see and what happen are two different things.
Taking away a poachers hunting license has always confused me.
These people don’t seem to care one way or another about the laws so what makes us think the will even care about a license anyway.
I think we need to hit them more where it hurts, if not longer jail time then more money, thousands of hours of community service, gun and vehicle confiscation

aahh I don’t know just burns me to no end.

Gun and vehicle confiscation... i like that.

Maybe a little chineese water drip torture too (just to make sure they have told us EVERYTHING!).

We could put them in a field and have 5 hunters spot and stalk... we could strip them down, cover them in honey and tie them to an ant hill - i like that one!

Feed them to aligators. Coat their private parts in bird seed, tie them down spread eagle, and put a hungry ostrich in the room.

Poachers Suck A$$!

Yep, their jail time should be measured in YEARS, not DAYS!

I agree steeper fines more jail time, and take his vehicles and guns. He must not have been a very good coach.Does anyone have the original article?

Its true poachers show they don't care what the law is so taking away a hunting license doesn't seem to make a lot of sense from that perspective. But what if they didn't take away thier hunting license? That means Joe Blow gets convicted this year of poaching 5 deer, 2 elk and a moose and next year he can LEGALLY hunt the same hill you and I hunt. Now that would really piss me off. From that perspective taking away a license does make sense. Hunting is a privilege and you most definitely should lose that privilege if you abuse it. I just wish they took em away longer for most of these guys.

Yeah they need to take the license away, but it would be rather ironic if that was the only punishment.

Realistically though, I don't think I've ever heard of a poaching sentence where the only punishment was just a license revocation. Usually there is a mix of fines, community service, or jail time with the license loss.

It would be interesting to know how many poachers get caught. I suspect it is pretty low, but I have no data to confirm that.
