Please folks, make sure your dogs are road wise.

Dutchess, me 3 year old L.M. has been trained NOT to go near the road. For 3 years never been an issue. Today wife had Dutchess in the truck with her. Wife opened the truck door and Dutchess bolted across the road....never had a chance. Busted pelvic, ruptued bladder and a broke leg, Dutchess died in arms at the vets. Dutchess was a great dog.

Please folks, make sure your dogs are road wise, and refresh their training ever so often.

Oh WhiskeyJaR I'm so sorry about Dutchess. I bet your wife is just sick that it happened when she opened the door.

Dutchess was a beautiful dog!

I am so very sorry to hear this, my condolences.

May she now be able to hunt all the birds that she desires, and in a much better place.

So sorry to hear about Dutchess, Whiskey.

Some people feel a dog is just a pet while I believe true dog owners/lovers believe they are more like family. I, for one, will be deeply saddened to see my "girl" pass on.

My dog nearly had the same fate when she was younger. Luckily I taught her to obey hand signals. I was working in a sub-division one day checking in on my guys, came out the house to go back to the truck. She sees me, wants to greet me by runing to me, meanwhile here comes a UPS driver full speed. I yelled her name and threw up my hand for her to stop. She did and the truck went by within a foot. I was sooo thankful I had trained to her to respond to hand signals. As she gets older and her hearing is getting back, the hand signals are paying dividends. I'll always train my dogs to respond to hand signals.

Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for all the kind words folks.

I remeber one time when I had Dutchess out hunting forrest rats. She hit point on this fat rat sitting atop a log. Welp I told Dutchess to "steady up" and took a shot with me .22 I thought I had hit that rat for sure as it fell behind the log. I sent Dutchess to "grab it up". Sent went over that log, down behind it and was outa sight for a couple minutes, when I heard Dutchess yip and seen the rat come flying threw the air and land about 2 feet from me. The rat took off threw the scrub and Dutchess jumped up atop the log and sat there GLARING at me witha cut lip. If looks could kill, I would have been mounted on Dutchess's doghouse wall. Her eyes where screaming at me "What the heck ya thinking sending em after that NINJA RAT. Dutchess let me know she was DONE hunting for that day, so we headed home, stopping of at the vet's so she could get 2 stitches in her lip. Dutchess was so mad at me, she wouldnt even talk to me. I had to stop off at the Dairy queen and get her a cup of peanut butter icecream just to make up.

This is not a reflection on JR. I know him and I know what Dutchess ment to him. I learned obedience training from a woman that had won three Dog World Awards in Obedience, very hard to win. To demonstrate things for us, she would use her old Doberman, Dusty. Dusty had a UDXT Obedience degree. One thing she told me I'll never forget is don't take your dag for a walk around town no matter how well it's trained, off lead. Problem being one small mistake on the dog's part can be devastating. That Dusty was the finest working dog I have ever seen but he was never off lead unless at home or in an obedience ring.

Things just happen to fast sometimes!
