Planning trip out west...HELP!

Myself and a buddy would like to plan a trip out west. Our dream would be an elk hunt, but being this is our first time, we would settle for a mulie hunt or antelope. Is an elk hunt seem too impossible for 2 guys who have never hunted out west.? We would like to camp and have all the essential gear. Also if an elk hunt isn't to far fetched what state and what zones would give us our best chance. We live in the Upper Peninsula of michigan, and would be willing to help anyone planning a hunting or fishing trip up this way. Any help at all would be great....Thanks,
Josh

Wyoming is a good place to consider but you will have to get your applications in QUICK. You only have until Jan 31 to get the application in to the Dept of Game & Fish. You can do it on line and save a bunch of time. But this late in the game Colorado might be better. I think there you have until April to apply.

draw

Even if your draw results are unsuccessful, you could go over-the-counter bull tag (OTC) in Colorado. I wouldn't say it's impossible for two guys who have never done it. Plenty of time to get ready, do research and plan. First year will be tough but you'll get better at it. It's anything but a slam dunk. Odds of success are generally low unless you want to pay for a guided hunt, especially first time DIY'ers. Good luck!

Planning trip out west...HELP!

My business partner and I went on out first trip out west last year to Wyoming for a antelope hunt. We figured this would give us the best chance of success for first time DIY's, and we were right. We both tagged out the first day on nice pronghorn bucks. We hunted public land (BLM) in zone 70 just west of Casper. We've also hunted prairie dogs in Wyoming a couple times before and saw plenty of antelope everywhere we went from Cheyenne up to Casper.

If your elk hunt doesn't materialize I'd strongly recommend Wyoming for a pronghorn hunt.

Good luck no matter where you go or what you hunt!

To be honest, it wasn't as good as I had hoped. I've been eating whitetail deer, squirrel, and rabbit all my life, and love all of it. But the antelope had a stronger taste than deer. It even smelled different when we were cooking it. It's edible, but nothing I'd want to brag about. I've talked to other folks that love it, so I guess it's just like everything else. We all have different tastes and preferences. My preference is for whitetail deer.

I didn't go for the meat anyway, I was more interested in the experience and the HORNS! Thumbs up

Nice turbo goat. I am glad to see you give an honest assesment of the meat. I don't much care for it myself but I love hunting them. This year they were really different. They were few & far between but the meat was really good. My wife doesn't care for antelope at all but I had some chorizo sausage made from my first one (a doe) and she really liked it.
