PLANNING A HUNT

I need some help. My hunter buddy and I will have 10 preference points in 2010 and are ready to cash them in. We are out-of-state hunters. We have been to colorado the past 8 years (OTC Archery) mainly packing ourselves in. We have 4 horses that we have taken the past 6 years. We aren't looking for the biggest bulls but are more interested in seeing lots of elk and having some opportunities. I have always hear good things about unit 76, any ideas?

76 is your best bet with horses. Lots of wilderness there. There are really only a handful of units to consider with 10 points, 61 and 40 being the others. But I'd lean towards 76 if I had horses and was a nonresident. Plenty of elk, plenty of opportunity for a good bull, plenty of room to spread out.

Big smile Thanks for your reply, we are hoping to draw 76. if we are lucky enough to draw a tag do you have any advice on which trailhead to start with. we can only stay two weeks so any heads up would be very helpful. do you know of any good maps of this area? Thanks for the help.

Nat forest maps , blm maps ,usgs topo and google earth all work for me and they all offer a little different insite. Can you come out and scout at all this summer? no need to bring the horses just learn your way around to settel on a area to hunt . In 76 all the action is at or very near timber line in september and some of that can be a long ride in you should try to see the country first.some roads are too bad to pull a trailer on and you dont want to waste time on dead ends.I hunted 76 4 years ago and loved it, big time into elk every day !!

Re: PLANNING A HUNT

Thanks for info. not sure about a trip this summer, i would love to but i would have to take vacation from work and that would cut into my time i could spend in colorado this fall. i live in southern arkansas (22 hr drive one way) so i would have to take several days to be able to do it. I will try to get as many up to date maps as i can if anyone has some tips for unit 76 i would greatly appreciate it.
