Plains Hunting Rifle/Caliber/Load

If an '06 case enthusiast had a 25-06, a 280, a 338-06 and believe it not there's a .375 diameter on the 30-06 case. I don't recall the name of the round. They would have a grand selection to choose from.

that would be a fine selection...but,better suited for handloaders, imo.

i do not roll my own, (yet), so need to stick with cartridges that give plenty o'choices and flexability in factory loads. i guess thats why i am so partial to the 06, i love the flexability it offers. the 7rm, .308, and .270 offer great choices also, i just prefer the 06.

but i have to admit, after taking the 338wm to africa and seeing its performance, i love it!

the 06 would have handled everything i did, but in my opinion not as efficiently and gracefully. the confidence instilled into you watching its performance is a positive also.

if you can handle the recoil,it is not for everone, the 338wm is the way to go for a plains game hunt.

the 338-06, and 35 whelen are great rounds, i suppose the popularity of these are due to a little less recoil than the 338wm. i am not sure, have not fired either. but due to factory ammo selection, and me not handloading, i will stick to the 06 and 338wm

Not a bad fall back by any means. I like the 35 whelen, not necessarily less or more than the 338, because it performs just as well as the 338 within about 175-200 yards, in my opinion. It's not as flat shooting, and it doesn't have the sectional density of the winny, but it puts in a bigger hole, and it's (at least mine anyways) lighter in weight with less recoil.
