Pike Fishing

Went up to Craig to visit with my oldest son this past weekend and do some fishing on Elkhead. Caught over 30 pike running 14 to 36.25 inches. Here are the two biggest of the trip. My wife's was 34 inches and mine just over 36 making it a master angler patch fish. My son lost a big fish due to the treble hook being straightened out. Would have loved to seen that one! Caught all on Rapalas while trolling in about 15 foot of water. Released all but two smaller fish that where hooked up in the gills and bleeding bad which worked out as we planned to take a few for dinner. Only caught one really small, small mouth and 2 nice crappies at 10 and 12 inches. It was a great weekend and look forward to getting back up there.

Great pictures and great

Great pictures and great fish. I love pike fishing but haven't done it for a few years now. Rifle gap is too busy anymore and my motor isn't allowed in Harvey where I used to do the best.

Not familiar with that lake, I might have to check it out some time. Went to Powell this last weekend and did okay but it's too hot already and the stripers not doing much. Brought back over 50 cats though and a few smallmouth.

Thanks, it was a good time

Thanks, it was a good time and cannot wait to get back. Have not been to Powell in a few years but always enjoy fishing it. We usually do Ok on strippers but always at night. Not sure you can go to Powell and not catch cats. It is a lot of fun and those 2-3 pounders are great eating. Also have done well on some big bluegils and a few walleye from time to time. Have caught some small mouths but nothing much more than 12 inches. If you get the chance check out Elkhead as the pike fishing is very good and the bass fishing can be pretty good too. My son got a 19 inch small mouth 2 weeks ago so that was a real dandy. If you can find the crappie they can be a great time and a few good meals too.

Man, I miss pike fishing.  I

Man, I miss pike fishing.  I grew up in Vermont, and we had tons and tons of pike there.  First day of the Lake Champlain derby one year, my buddy and I took his little 14 foot metal duckboat down to the bay, and caught 56 northerns.  Our Rapalas were slightly beat up after that day..... Wink

Couple of nice fish you have there.  Congrats!

That sounds like a great

That sounds like a great trip. Not sure we ever got that many in a day but I know what you mean about the pike busting up some lures. We had had hooks straightened out, chunks torn off lures and 5 inch Rapalas broken in half. Always fun catching those toothy boys and girls.
