is it possible to hunt pigs (swines, hogs, boars, etc.) with a recurve? I've seen references to bow hunting for them, but mainly pertaining to compounds. Also, does anyone know of areas in PA or NJ (rest of east coast) for wild pigs? Or, should I not bother looking outside the scope of guided game farms in the northeast/southeast?

by the way, i'm new to the forum ... so, hi. any other female hunters in here?[/b]

Recurve wouldn't be my first choice. For Javelina in AZ, sure, for a big pig, no. My Cousin shot one in the head and neck with a .357, twice. He then chased it for a long distance. Don't lecture me on ethics - I didn't pull the trigger - I'm just saying they're TUFF. The Boar was just under 300lbs.

Also, a large boar can have up to a 3" thick cartilage (sp) plate of "armor" around it's chest. You need as much penetration as you can get.

You are much better off with a good compound - more energy is transfered to the arrow than a recurve. And most people find them easier to shoot over farther distances once it's dialed in right... When you've invested the time and $$$ in a pig hunt, you want to be able to kill whichever pig you see, and not be limited by your equipment.

Jesse.

P.s. sorry, but i'm not a chick.

thanks

Thanks Jesse, that's helpful. I would much rather not have to run away from an angry monster pig. It's okay you're not a chick. I was just curious if there were any others in here. I'll stick to targets with the recurve, maybe gravitate to compound when I can. happy hunting.
