Photos of Keys deer

Recently we visited the Florida Keys and had the pleasure of exploring and hiking on Big Pine Key as well as No Name Key, both home to the tiny Keys whitetail deer. The following photos were taken from my eye level and I'm not a tall person! They appeared to be under 3 feet tall.

These deer have not been hunted for many years. I believe they were endangered. They are the tiniest deer I've ever seen, they look so delicate. If you did hunt them, there wouldn't be much meat on these little guys.

i lived in key largo for three years and had many chances to go to big pine and see the key deer. they are in fact the smallest subspecies of the whitetail as far as i know. when we lived there it was illegal to feed them in any way. $20,000 fine if caught . they can really be a nuisance to the locals. actually have to hang your garbage or keep it in a bin or the deer will get into it like coons and neighboorhood pets.

Hello Lacy_94 & welcome to BGH! Big smile

It is my understanding that the Keys deer only live on the Florida Keys and nowhere else. The deer in your area are most likely full sized whitetail deer.

Jsh164, I was able to get within just a few feet of the Keys deer. The ones we encountered seemed unafraid of people. To photograph them I approached them very slowly like I do all wildlife, barely moving & trying to hold very still. Instead of moving away from me, they actually walked towards me!
