Pheasant Restoration Initiative in Michigan

At least 8 different conservation groups are going to be working together to launch the Michigan Pheasant restoration Initiative. This is an effort aimed at providing better habitat for nesting and cover for pheasants in three separate areas of Michigan's lower peninsula. The goal is to eventually have 2 million acres of land with grasses and crops specifically planted with pheasants in mind.

When I was a kid, there were pheasants everywhere in Michigan. Now there are very few pockets of them, and most pheasant hunting is done on put-and-take preserves.

Most of the pheasant hunting

Most of the pheasant hunting here on the western side of the state is a similar situation and as such I have never had the opportunity to hunt them. I'm not sure on the eastern side but I assume it is much better over there.

We tried to give it a go in Texas last year but missed the opener by a day and didn't have time to stick around.

One of these days I'll hook up with some somewhere.

Nice pics! I had a friend

Nice pics!

I had a friend growing up who would take a trip with his Dad and uncles to I think South Dakota each year.

They would go for almost 2 weeks, and hunt waterfowl one week, then pheasants the next.  I always loved seeing the photos and hearing about all the game they got into.

The Dakota's are exactly what

The Dakota's are exactly what my dad said also. He's never hunted them either and seems more interested than I am. I don't have a dog of my own so I'll have to start checking out some of the guides that operate up there. I'm not sure if it's worth going that far just for birds but if there's nothing else to hunt at that time then I'm all for it.

Great looking dog by the way. We ran a lot of beagles for rabbits when I was a kid but it's been a long time since I've had a hunting dog.

I started hunting with my Dad

I started hunting with my Dad when I was 6 and we had a black & tan and a bluetick that we killed so many coons with back then it was unreal.  Then fur prices went way down and the dogs died of old age.  Then we went with a couple of registered beagles that had a lot of field champions in their lineage, but we never ran trials with them, just shot a lot of rabbits until they died.  I never had a dog I could actually call my own until this bird dog.  My stepson bought him from a kennel in Georgia as a puppy in the Fall of 2003.  In early Summer of 2006 he and his family had to move due to the recession and couldn't take Herc with them, so I took him, kennel, doghouse, cage, etc. to keep him in our family.  He immediately became my best buddy and moved inside when Winter hit and has been in the house ever since.  Incidentally he's not a GSP, but rather a Deutsch Drahthaar that didn't grow his wiry muzzle hair like the breed is known for.
