Just a thought and maybe I'm up in the night but I wonder if the entire world went vegetarian and anti animal use for everything, how many people would starve? I've been to South America and I know a big food source for those people are animals. In such a hot climate the soils is poor and not much farming is done there. Only in the mountains do things really grow down there.

That is an interesting thought. If people didn't starve, at the least a lot more land (public, private, jungle, wetland, etc) would be lost to farming, in order to boost wheat/corn/soy/etc production to feed the world.

One could argue that it is actually better for animals and habitats in general if we are omnivores. If we did convert entirely to vegans, 6 billion hunger mouths (and growing) would take huge chunks of habitat and convert it to farm land.

I honestly believe the PETA people would prefer the starvation scenario. They view humanity as a plague on the planet that should be eliminated in order for animals to live happy lives in peaceful harmony.

Thats fine if they think that way. Lets tell them we are going to git rid of some humans to make room for more animals. Then lets ask for volunteers and hopefully they'll step up.

Believe it or not, there's groups out there that are advocating pretty much what you're describing. I forget the name, but I read about one group that's advocating self-extinction for the benefit of the planet. Their agenda is to convince the world to stop reproducing, and in roughly 100 years humanity will be gone and the world will be able to live in peace.

PETA may not go be quite that radical, but the same philosophy underpins both groups -- self-loathing and the belief that animals have more right to existence than we do. PETA just doesn't carry it quite as far.
