Performance of my first reloads

Today was the day that I fired my first reloads.

I fired some 30.06 cartridges BT spitzers filled with 57 gr of H4350 and had to adjust my scope. It was zeroed based on factory ammo and the reloads were about 4" high. I got good performance with this load and with a COL just a little longer than the COL for a factory cartridge.

But not as good performance when I went longer, but still under the COL in the manual.

The reloads performed better than factory loads. I think I'll stay with the 57 gr, but experiment with the COL.

The .243 was a little different. The factory cartridge I measured exceed the manuals COL. I stayed at the min for the load the performance was no better than the factory ammo. The group was tight but we'll see if we can't do better.

I don't remember ever measuring the overall length of a factory cartridge Think
Now that you're operational, enjoy yourself.
When you are loading the 06s keep everything related to the 243 off the bench and out of sight, and vice versa when loading the 243s etc and keep that manuel handy for reference, and double check Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

Hammer1 - good advice.

I didn't see anything in the manuals that said to measure the COL of a factory cartridge, but thought it might provide a reference point since I've been shooting them.

I like to keep my OAL quite long as well. I find the best accuracy close to the lands of the rifle but not touching them. It is something you can "adjust" to suit your rifles taste. Some rifles will not feed well with the longer cartridges though.
