Numbers low on the kills, but way UP on the quality of the ones taken it seems.

Shame on You! same size bears were killed this year as get killed every year here in Pa...not way up on quality...just down on numbers. Kind of like the deer herd..less but not better

Taken directly from the 2005 Reports filed.

Similar to past years, almost equal numbers of male and female bears were harvested. The average bear taken by a hunter weighed 184 pounds, although several large bears, including an 834-pound male, were killed. Approximately 2.2 percent, or 1 in 44 hunters who purchased a bear license was successful.

Note the 184 average? Pa has always been known to hold some large bears but the averages of the larger bears has been increasing over the past few years. So far this has been a good year although lower numbers have been harvested.

That better Mod? I noticed you took off my perfectly civil answer so I quoted directly from the harvest reports!

184# black bear here in Pa isn't exactly what one would call "mounting material"...but a trophy is in the eye of the beholder....I guess

I've killed a couple of bears in Pa (4) my 1st was field dressed 124# female 4 yrs old that I had made into a rug...then I started to pass on little bears and have killed a 352 dressed, 478 dressed and 504 dressed in a total of 7 years hunting them. Haven't bothered with them last few years but did have a few trapped in my corn fields after I told the local WCO if they don't do something soon I was going to shoot them myself.
