peanut butter

has anybody ever used peanut butter to attract deer, or think it would work. i heard a tip from another sit that says, Nail a hole threw a peanut butter lid and cut the bottom out of the peanut butter jar. Nail the lid to the tree (make sure it is easily accessible and that the deer can reach it), screw the peanut butter jar to the lid and deer should come and lick out the bottom of it. You need to do this a little while before hunting season.

I have no idea, but my bet is that it will work. Anytime you put anything out for deer(ie apples, molasses) always give at least ten days before expecting any noticeable results.

I believe they prefer the crunchy over the creamy.

All joking aside, I've put out peanut butter for birds and had deer come into my yard and eat it.

Personally, I don't use any kind of bait or attractant. If you like to do it, that's fine by me. It's just not my preference. It's not because I disagree with the use of it. I just believe that you have more opportunities for mature deer without it. Especially in an area with a fair amount of hunting pressure.

Plus baiting is illegal in many areas so it's definitely out for Manitoba.

I've heard people will take a five gallon bucket, with a lid, drill a hole in the center of the bottom 1-1/2" in diameter.

Then take a wooden dowel of 1" diameter about 14" in length, drill a hole about 3" from one end right through the dowel (sideways, not end to end of course). This is to put a metal rod or nail through.

Once the rod/nail is in place through the dowel, slide it through the hole in the bucket, from inside. The nail/rod will prevent it from dropping out and allow it to swivel (very important).

Now fill the pail with corn, you have a cheap realiable feeder. Replace the top and hang from a tree branch. Far enough from the trunk so smaller varmits don't clean you out.

Lastly but most importantly, and the reason I was posting this, cover the end of the dowel which hangs below the bucket with peanut butter. This will condition the deer to lick it, eventually they will catch on that moving the stick gets them the corn.

Also leave a couple air holes on the side of the bucket about 1" under the rim for the lid, helps the corn flow freely.

I'll be making a couple for this season as they sure sound like the price is right.

Good luck if you go for it!

I've been told that deer are particularly attracted to copenhagen chewing tabacco. I don't know if this is true though, I've never tried.
