OK -- so we're supposed to be upset because Sarah Palin asked for 31 earmarks out of 8,800 in the bill? And oh, by the way -- she said we needed earmark reform and she dropped her request from 51 in 2008 to 31 in 2009. That's nearly a 40 percent reduction.

If you're trying to paint Sarah Palin as a bad person here, you're not doing a very good job of it. How many states asked for less?

Besides...Obama said he wanted earmark reform, too. Sarah Palin: 31. Barack Obama: 8,800. Do you really want to have this discussion?

And don't start with the cost/capita BS about Alaska. Alaska's an expensive state. It has more coastline than the rest of the US combined. It has four major military installations and a handful of smaller ones. It's also peppered with radar and communications sites. It only has around 675,000 people, and those people are scattered across more than half a million square miles of wilderness. Much of the population lives off the road system in towns and villages accessible only by air or by sea. Did you know that Barrow has a learjet on alert because any serious emergencies have to go to Anchorage -- some 800 miles away? The climate in the interior can vary over 150 degrees over the course of the year, an much of the infrastructure has permafrost underneath it. Its industries are often remote and heavily regulated. Alaska has more private pilots and aircraft per capita than anywhere in the US -- and they're scattered across the state. Do you have any idea of the challenges this poses for the FAA?

The bottom line of all this is 1) Alaska has a disproportionately high number of federal jobs; 2) Alaska's industries are heavily dependent on regulation; 3) Alaska's environment makes engineering a challenge; and 4) Logistics costs make everything extremely expensive. Oh, and I might add that a whole lot of interest is being paid to environmental issues, too, over global warming, fisheries, etc.

And oh, by the way -- in 2005 Alaska generated more taxes per capita than 32 other states. Meanwhile, it ranked #42 in terms of federal spending -- 0.4 percent of money sent to the states in 2005. That's nothing compared to California's share, which comprised just under 11 percent.

Yes, Alaska received $1.83 for every tax dollar generated in 2005. But that's still better than New Mexico, which came in at 2.00 to 1. West Virginia was at 1.75 to 1. I've been to both of those states and they're insanely cheap compared to Alaska. All told, 33 states took more from the federal government than what they contributed -- so Alaska is hardly alone in that regard.

Furthermore, using tax dollars spent per capita is a ridiculous measure of valid spending. Equity in that regard would require that rich folk in Cape Cod and the Hamptons get just as much per capita as people in Wounded Knee. The federal government doesn't budget based on population.

All told, the MSM has latched onto per capita spending to make it sound like Alaska is gorging itself at the federal trough -- and it's just not that simple.

You could make a lot of money just betting that she'll run.

or that whoever runs wins.

I don't know if she'll run in 2012. She's a pretty down to earth person and that business last fall was ridiculous. I think she's more focused on reelection in 2010, right now, and expecting to see a flow of national Democrat dollars flowing into the state over the past year and half to throw as much mud as possible.

Palin Will Keynote Senate And House Republican Campaign Dinner

Hope she talks about her grand kids but I fear just more requests for welfare for the welfare state to the north. Steele must be collecting quite a bit for 2010, him and Sarah will probably have lots to talk about.

I already covered the "welfare" for Alaska. You don't know what you're talking about and the numbers don't support your assertion -- so stop the blather.

I didn't even bother reading all of those excuses. Everyone knows Alaska gets such a huge welfare subsidy from the federal govt it's rediculous. Talk about subsidies for field mice! The bridge to nowhere.

Oil has gone down so the money you guys steal from oil companies is smaller, you had a conviction of your biggest oldest Porkbarreler, congressman changed, and a very vocal loud governor ran for VP and lost. So hand outs from the federal government are going to decrease. Better learn to work.
