How many attacks actually happen in the lower 48...I hear a lot of rumors about these types of things. Can anyone tell me where to go to read about attacks in the lower 48??

I've been thinking about taking a pistol with me - but I'm leaning towards taking a risk and leaving it at home. How common is it really?

I think that by using a good deal of common sense, you'll find that even in the wilds of Alaska where there's a bear behind every tree Think that if you look at the man hours of recreation put in vrs the number of attacks your safer there than in our nations capitol! I'd prefer a bear that really wants nothing to do with me to a drug addict that wants my wallet.

So, your referring to Native Americans? If so, thats still not right, I'm Native American up here in Oregon, we get along fine w/ Non Indians. And I dont drink, sober for 2 years this month, now I'm strictly an elkaholic Thats some ones handle on here Anyhow, thats messed up, and they should do time. But ya, I want a pistol, would be good during archery season if a cougar happens to be around

What I meant was 5 drunk guys( 2 armed) between ages of 23 and 41 who attacked our camp and spent about an hour threatening me( usual racial stuff) at gun point (2 guys)while 3 other guys went through our camp stealing 3 guns- binocs- stoves-knives-one bear hide- etc-- lucky they left our tents and sleeping bags or things might have ended up different-Ever had a 338 pointed at your guts by someone saying they were going to blow you away?? They attacked about 5 white camps on River-- claimed we were hunting on their land- stealing their game and other BS-we were on AK state land no where's near any property deeded to natives in '71 Lands Claim.
They spent between 2 & 7 yrs in jail for this leetle deal--I was only one in camp at time-fleshing a bear i shot day before--partners were out retrieving boo we shot earlier--I got away by running to willows and crawling in--one shot was sent my way--Any Questions??labor day 1998 where the Pah River meets the Kobuk

Rez-Many Alaskans get along also whether native or not-Many politicians like to keep things boiling as it gives them votes--ditto some of the younger guys who feel they have been screwed by life- whites etc. I traded furs, sold groceries( never booze),and bought dogs from folks in Bush Villages for many years--This was a one time thing but tensions have been higher since the Feds stepped in and began to manage AK hunting and fishing on a racial basis AFTER it was supposedly made equal for all with the Lands Claim Act.
Have a nice Day and a Happy New Year!
Don--I agree with you again- in 25 yrs in AK I only had one real "Pucker Time" with a Grizz. In most cases, when you saw a bear, you just kept on trucking and so did they--one buddy had to kill a BIG bear on Kodiak after being harrassed for 3 nights- BUT he did it with his .338 .I actually had more problems with moose--esp on trails with a dog team-- in heavy snow moose travel the trails and do not like to yield to measly leetle dogs.

I see, glad you see it the way you do and not hate totally on any race in general because of some bad "people" who mess it up for good people, and Happy New Years to you to bud!

That would be Very STUPID--I have no love for those guys BUT am also glad no one got hurt- me or them--I had a 44 mag wheel gun but decided to run--some folks argue i was chicken-- maybe so BUT I still would not like to kill anyone for a few lousy "THINGS"
I still have many Native friends in AK esp some old folks who have great traditional Fish camps along the Yukon and one guy on our Vintage snomachine Rally/ Race team is a native(81) who lives 20 miles from town on the Yukon--still traps/ fishes and makes his own boats-- Old Roy is a super person and totally self reliant.

side arm

I always carry my 45 on my side when hunting. I have had to use it to put a deer out of its misery when a shot failed to kill the deer. Not proud of that moment. There are also alot of weird people roaming around the hunting grounds at night. You just never know. Also, the mountain lions are in the area and we usually dont get back to camp until after way after dark..besides that we all like to carry a gun..its the only time I really get to carry mine.

I think it's great to carry a pistol. When ever I want to. I personally don't do it out of fear. I do it because it is my right and it is fun.
