Pack a pistol or not

Got a question, I guess out of curosity more than any thing. How of you pack a pistol or not in addition to your rifle when hunting, and if so what type and caliber is it?

Not in lower 48--In AK always did--to be used as LAST resort in case of big bear rpdeo--and usually only on horse trips as having rifle in scabbard a pistol might help in case of an unententional dismount-it was a 44 mag with 320 gr hard cast bullets--most often in a chest holster.
After an attack on our camp by five armed natives in 98 i would now carry my 9MM Auto for personal protection which say alot about hunting some places in AK today-when hunting on foot-backpacking I never wasted the weight by carrying a handgun.

What do you mean by "armed Natives?" Anyhow, now days with the cougar population rising I'm considering a pistol.

What I meant was 5 drunk guys( 2 armed) between ages of 23 and 41 who attacked our camp and spent about an hour threatening me( usual racial stuff) at gun point (2 guys)while 3 other guys went through our camp stealing 3 guns- binocs- stoves-knives-one bear hide- etc-- lucky they left our tents and sleeping bags or things might have ended up different-Ever had a 338 pointed at your guts by someone saying they were going to blow you away?? They attacked about 5 white camps on River-- claimed we were hunting on their land- stealing their game and other BS-we were on AK state land no where's near any property deeded to natives in '71 Lands Claim.
They spent between 2 & 7 yrs in jail for this leetle deal--I was only one in camp at time-fleshing a bear i shot day before--partners were out retrieving boo we shot earlier--I got away by running to willows and crawling in--one shot was sent my way--Any Questions??labor day 1998 where the Pah River meets the Kobuk

That is a sad deal! Wow, thankfully you all made it out.

When in Grizzly country I usually carry my .44 Mag S & W, I think it's a Model 629.

I have carried one but haven't in years. Can't see carrying all that extra weight. Imagine this, a guy looks to trim 4oz off his rifle to lighten the load the straps on 2 1/2 lbs of handgun!

I could NOT agree more--Don
We went so far on sheep hunts as to cut handles off spoon and fork-weighed out our knives and took lightest-freeze dried food(?) was the rule--etc one friend even cut his sleeping bag in 1/2 and only took the bottom--also used two gym bags on pack for clothes going in and carried them out in hands with meat on pack--43lb each--plus rifle was it for 7-10 day hunt- 2 guys each carying 1/2 of stuff like tent- stove- fuel etc.

How many attacks actually happen in the lower 48...I hear a lot of rumors about these types of things. Can anyone tell me where to go to read about attacks in the lower 48??

I've been thinking about taking a pistol with me - but I'm leaning towards taking a risk and leaving it at home. How common is it really?
