Oryx on the Small Missile Range

Howdy everyone. I just found this site and have been enjoying all of the useful info on here. Being an avid hunter for most of my life, I hhave found that hunters are to best people on earth and are alwys happy to help out a fellow hunter. Here's the deal.

I moved to Carlsbad in 1998, having spent the majority of my formative years inTexas. Like many of you, I have applied to hunt Oryx, unsuccessfully, for many years. So, I've never hunted the danged things. Know absolutely nothing about the animal other than general stuff that can be picked up on sites like this and books on hunting Africa.

My son, who will be 15 in June, just drew out for a once in a lifetime on the small missile range slated for September. Is scouting allowed on the range? Has anyone hunted the small missile range and can give me any pointers/heads up info? All help is greatly appreciated. I really want to provide him a nice hunt.

Oryx on the Small Missile Range

I don't believe that scouting is aloud but they are not hard to find. My brother-in-law drew out a couple years ago and was done by 11am the first day.
Make sure he is accurate out to about 300yards and is carring a heavy caliber
weapon(7mm Rem mag,300win) or somthing comprable they are big boned animals with a plate that comes back behind thier shoulder. Probably the best shot you could ask for would be slightly quartering away. Or do what my father-in-law did on his depredation hunt and shoot it in the head (probably not the first choise if having it mounted and they do make a beautiful mount)
Good luck to your son!!!!!

Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. He is really looking forward to the hunt. Talking to the guys at the range, the hunters out there are not extremely successful. Last year kill ratio was only 62% and 63% for September and January respectively. So a bit of luck and a lot of hard work should put him into a position to make a shot. The rest will be up to him. According to the guys at the SMR there are only about 250 animals on the Small Missile Range.
