I posted on the tread labelled Blacktail, but I thought I would post one here too. I have hunted Central Oregon area and taken some nice mulies, but would like to try blacktail hunting. I generally archery hunt, and haven't ever hunted over the mountain. I have read several websites and looked at ODFW for high populated areas of blacktail, but that only gives me minimal info to go on. I would like some suggestions as to areas to hunt and then I would be willing to put in the time to scout the area. If anyone has some suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if there are any tips on hunting blacktail-time of rut, technique, I would love anything you could offer. Thanks.
Welcome to BGH.
I used to hunt a lot outside Dallas up in the Polk-Talbot lands, Black Rock behind Falls City and up around Valsetz. Haven't been over there in a lot of years tho. Think I'd head for somewhere in the coast range if I went now tho. The valley is pretty much all private but used to be over run with deer. Come to think, I used to see a lot of deer down in the Medford area. Maybe out toward Cave Junction. Big fire over there a few years ago and it ought to be good.

I know lots of local archery hunters get deer in the cascade foothills between sweethome and brownsville. Is where I go rifle hunting. Look on a map for a road called "brush creek" on hwy 228 just east of brownsville, on way to sweethome. It is mostly Timber company land, but they always open all gates during hunting season. Brush Creek heads south off hwy228.
i was working out by roseburg and drain last year and most of the guys out there said there were quite a few black tails around there, I havent hunted it personally but just heard word of mouth
I have taken some pretty nice bucks out of the Trask Unit. There is quite a bit of public land there. Just have to know where to find them. Good luck!
I've hunted the santiam unit, lots of public land . i usally hunt the northern half and have seen and shot many bucks.
Little Fall Creek, Scott Creek, Boulder Creek, and Foley Ridge all have produced bucks for me.
I agree with Gunner, Trask unit is a good hunt due to high percentage of public land. Don't be afraid to knock on doors out here. I have met folks happy to have someone perform "pest removal" services to protect crops or their precious gladiolas.
If I were hunting with a bow, I'd try the high cascades. MUCH LESS BRUSHY than the Coast range. Rut in the west usually starts about a week before Halloween, which is rifle season soon to be elk season. Blacktails can not be patterend like whitetails can so tree stands are a tough way to hunt, (which is how most whitetail bowhunters take their animals). Spot & stalk is hard for all the dry brush at that time of year....Good luck ![]()
Hi everyone, I just moved here last July. Too late for me to get into hunting last year, but am ready this year. I have heard about a few places. So should I hunt Mulies or Blacktails in the general areas? I think I am more interested in a nicer Blacktail than a Muley. Am willing to hike long ways to find him too. I live in North Bend but am willing to travel east for good spots to find good hunting. Also I can only hunt one kind of deer right per year If I score?
keith,
yeah your right, if you want a blacktail thats gonna be a general season tag, and it will be west of the cascades. if you want a muley its a controlled hunt or lottery draw hunt, apts need to be in by may 14 or 15 i cant remember. over all the mulleys on the eastside are easier to hunt. you could apply for eastside and if you dont draw you can still buy a general season tag for western oregon. you can pick up a reg book at many stores like Gi joes, Fred Myers, walmart or any sporting good store. hope that helps. good luck
