Opinions on which caliber for elk??

I just booked a cow elk hunt in CO this fall and hoping to spark a little conversation on which caliber I should use. I have a Encore in 308 and a Winchester Mod. 70 in 7mm STW. Most of the shots will be 100-300 yards according to the outfitter. Any opinions on factory rounds would be helpful here also. I am currently leaning towards the STW with a Remington Safari Grade 140 grain Swift A-frame.

I agree with ChesterGolf and would add that 140 grainers are a bit on the light side if heavier weights available for the calibre.:
Federal loads a 160 grain Sierra Spitzer Boat-Tail bullet at a MV of 3200 fps with ME of 3640 ft. lbs. That would be my choice.
Good Luck & Play Safe Thumbs up

7mm stw would be the better choice but the 308 out too 200 yards wouldnt be a prob either.also 308 comes in a heavier grain offering :thumbsup1

I don't think either would have any real advantage over the other if you can do your job. Were I to go with the 7mm, I'd definatelly look to the 160 gr bullet's. In 308 165gr or 180gr. The most important thing here is your choice of bullet and what's avaliable in factory loading.

I could not tell you how much difference the penetration woill be in say the 140 gr and 160gr 7mm bullet's but I can tell you this, the heavier one will penetrate deeper and hold together better which means retain more weight with bullets of equal construction.

just use an 375 HH then it doesnt mater if its a perfect shot. you want enough power to be able to go threw the guts to get to the vitas if needed

Whichever one you shoot better is the one you should carry.

I like the winchester fail safe 160gr for the stw.
They are not as accurate as the federal 160gr boattails, but are an excellent bullet for tougher animals.

Winchester bullets are junk and the pic proves it. Not only would I not use them , I will not hunt with anyone who does.
