opening day in Colorado!

Hey all,I got out sat morning to a spot where i know the turks are but hard to lure them from their private property with a feeder. So i continued up the trail and heard some gobbling way down the valley near some private so i sat down and called for a bit but nothing comin my way so i picked back up and continued into the forest. As i started back some more i noticed a few tracks and before u know it i saw a read head disappear in front of me so i knew they were around.i got to where i wanted to stop and turn around and head back and called once and immediatly got a gobbler to gobble back.i took a quick seat in some nice pinon forest and in a couple of minutes there were turkeys around me.after they settled in i notice there were only three of them,a hen, jake, and tom.the tom was courting the hen and beating his fan in the air.the jake was looking everywhere for my hen call and i was ready.it was pretty thick and i could see and hear the toms tailfeathers fan up and down while he walked back and forth.twenty minutes later they finally worked a little closer to me so i got ready and watched their ritual a little longer before i confirmed beard length.the tom wouldnt stand still in my open lane so i was gettin a little cramped and needed to cough badly.i snuck a drink of water and solved that.the tom and hen were busy so they were not paying much attention anyway.i just had try and not have the jake bust me as he was all over the place. It was fun watching them but i figured i better take my oppurtunity, and tom stepped into view looked right at me and i looked him right between the eyes and bam, hunt over! :\:D/ the hen a jake didnt know where to run and the tom was flappin a bit and they walked over to check him out.I got up and retrieved him and was ecstatic Yes took a couple of phone picks and hike the 1 1/4 miles out in my berber fleece with under armour on,boy was i steamin when i got back,a little to much clothing for that time of day.what a great day in the woods, didnt see another person!20 lbs,8 inch beard, and 3/4 inch spurs, how old do you think that makes him?

Hey now, great job and nice bird. He's most likely two years old with 3/4" spurs, maybe three

On a side note for Hoggetter the Utah draws are done and a lot have had there CC's charged for the tags so you may want to check yours. Good luck.

Congrats on the nice bird man! I got mine on opening day too. It's posted in the Rocky Mountain forum... probably should have posted here, ha.

Here is a link to some good studies on spur and beard length vs. age. Sounds like he is a great two year old bird. Nice job man!
