Opening Day?

So, what does "Opening Day" mean to you?  Do you think of the very first season that opens in your area, or a different location/season?  For me, even though Archery and rifle both start here well before Vermont, I always think of the first day of Vermont rifle season as "Opening Day".

Maybe it's because there is more anticipation, considering it's only 2 weeks long.  In CA, our archery season is 4 months long, and rifle is 5 weeks.  Maybe since there is no rush, there is not as much "tradition" for opening day.

What do you guys think?

Well opening day to me means,

Well opening day to me means, its time to test all my skill and what little patents i have.  I think in all my years of hunting i have only tagged out 1 time on opening day and it sucked.  I had to go back to work!!  while everyone else got to keep hunting.  Opening day is just not the first day of the hunt it is also the first day you find out you got a tag and now you got to figure out where your going to hunt, how your going to hunt and is this going to be the year.  I don't get to hunt multuble state each year, but opening day start well before the hunt starts.

I know what you mean about

I know what you mean about shooting something opening day.  I shot my first deer ever back when I was 20.  I waited all year for the next season to get there.  Made all my arrangements to go back to Vermont, to get out intot the woods again.

Well, the next season came, I flew home, got all my stuff set out the night before, and went to bed.  Woke up, got ready, and hit the woods.  Well, I was in the woods 21 minutes and had my buck.  All that waiting, and only hunted 21 minutes.

My mom liked it though, because it meant that I was able to spend the rest of my vacation at home with her instead of sitting in the woods.

I hunt so many seasons now in

I hunt so many seasons now in severak states with my dad and my kids that I hadn't even thought about the term opening day anymore. I just sort of look at it as the beginning as it gets closer. There are probably seven or eight different opening days between all the seasons here at homne and the couple other states we sometimes hunt. Plus I hunt less than half these seasons myself with a tag of my own and am usually just along as the guide for my kids and someone to drag or pack meat. Anyway the term opening day jsut doesn't seem to fit anymore.

I think it's more of an eastern thing like you mentioned. Back in Michigan or Wisconsin when I was a kid the season opens on the same date every year no matter what the day of the week and there is just one rifle season. So the idea of opening day takes on a much bigger meaning because of the traditional opening date it's set on.

Opening day for me is the

Opening day for me is the first day i get in the woods for whatever animal i'm hunting, I have an opening day for deer and one for elk and one for bear and whatever else i'm hunting that year, now that i'm bow hunting my deer and elk start the same day, but bear starts Aug 1st, then comes deer/elk on Aug 27th so i have 2 opening days this year. And if I dont tag out a deer during early archery than i get a third opening day for late season archery. so i guess it will be up to 3 opening days for me this year. Although with sergury looming in my near future i hope i can tag out early and not miss the late season with a tag still in my pocket, so I have a lot to get done in my 10 days i took off in Sept for my deer/elk hunt. I' still get gitty little a school girl when opening day rolls around and i hope that feeling never goes away.
