Ontario Moose Hunting........

I am a non-resident to Ontario...But I have been spending my hard earned money up there every fall for the past 12 years....Hunted Bear, deer and for the last 3 years I have been chasing "Bullwinkle" from one clearcut to the other.Guess what? That's right....still haven't scored.
Now between calling, sex scent lures, food scent lures and etc. Have yet to bring in a bull to within bow range...lots of cows and calves but no bulls. Now what I want to ask of you folks that may live in Ontario or wherever there is a large population of Moose is:
Again Hope I don't offend anyone with this question ....What is a super "bait" to bring in the bulls to a particular area. Here in the Land of Lincoln (Illinois) we are not allowed to bait for anything...But I have all the regulations for Ontario and baiting is an accepted way of hunting up there...So if any of you have any good ideas.....they would be greatly appreciated. In turn I will share some of my deer hunting secrets with you....and I don't claim to be a braggit but I have over 125 deer that have passed through my freezer in the last 40 years. So here's hoping to hear from some of the moose hunters...Thanking you in advance for some tricks of the trade..Thank You.

Super bait--A LIVE cow tethered to a tree--Only way i ever got a Moose in AK(74-98) or Ontario(99-07)was by being there at right time- in right place-and hunting hard--never used fake antlers- sprays or lures- have called quite a few in but have to admit--I'm a rifle hunter- we did get two one year with bows in AK but on a special hunt near town. have several friends who also like to handicap them selves by using bow but who have scored on those Occasions when they didn't want/ need meat.

call / scrape well and not too much

I have never even seen anybody up here hunt with bait or lures for moose

I admire your perseverence (sp?)....keep trying....maybe all that manufactured odour is keeping them away??

maybe get some real cow urine?? yuck....but maybe?!

best of luck

Hey Taku--Welcome back- I hope you had a great fall hunt and wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I'll be back in Fai in March for the Tired Iron Vintage Snomachine rally/ race.
I've never used much heard of lures for bulls and certainly never carrieda decoy or set of antlers into the bush either.

Widux...that sounds like a great time....I presume you're flying up...if not, and your cruising by on the ol' Alaska Hwy...let me know

Ya the whole lure/scent/bait thing is quite foreign to me - I'm sorry I can't be more help....I've called/scraped moose in to about 30 35 yards on numerous occasions...it takes time, but it can be done

Thanks for the holiday good wishes....Merry Christmas to you as well.

and to you, Johnftwobucks, keep trying...your day will come and your arrow will fly straight and true...until then...I wish you the best for the holidays as well !

All I've ever used was a birch bark horn. Many techniques have been posted here over the past couple of years, some good reading.

Ontario Moose Hunting..

To The Gents That Have Responded to my Questions on Ontario Moose Hunting.......
Thank you for your responses, greatly appreciated and do have a Very Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Years.........
One thing for sure there is definitely a great difference in Hunting in Ontario and Alaska.I've actually found mineral blocks in the bush in Ontario and I realize everyone has away of doing things...one gent recommended the use of a canoe...not where I hunt......You got fisherman running the waterways at about 60 miles an hour......But again... thanks for the motivational responses..

"There is a great difference betwixt Ontario and Alaska???"
I don't think so- I moved to Wisc in '98 after 25 yrs in AK and started hunting
moose in Ontario the nexr fall-I applied everything I had learned in AK and it seemed to work- Ain't been skunked yet.

Well, that explains some of it...

I suggested the stealth of a canoe....

"....one gent recommended the use of a canoe...not where I hunt......You got fisherman running the waterways at about 60 miles an hour......

if you're bowhunting where fisherman are running the waterways at about 60 miles an hour you need to change...

(see last part of post)

no amount of scent our bait or whatever is going to help you there....

if you can't do that....be out there calling/scraping well before sun up (ie. well before the 60 mile per hour boats)

Can you hunt in Ontario as a non resident without a guide? You couldn't here in the Yukon. Hell, after 12 years I'd tell you to come up here and I'd get you in bow range...but it's not legal.

Anyway...like I said.... I admire your perseverence....hang in there....your time will come...

Merry Christmas!!

Best moose in the north

I have been hunting north of Timmins Ontario for the last 2 years and got the bull each time. I have seen over 30 moose each trip (with lots of pics to prove it)...all within short zoom camera range. I'm not much of a caller, and most of the time I'm dogging thru the bush, but if you have any skill what-so-ever it shouldn't be hard to bow a moose up there. Its 1 1/2 to 2 hrs north of Timmins out of a town called Hearst.
