Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban

Here's an e-mail I got from a friend down under........
Pay attention SoCoke.

Subject: Australian Gun Law Update.

Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts

From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia

Hi Yanks.

I thought you all would like to see the now available data from Down Under. It has now been one year (12 months) since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now available:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent.
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent.
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent).
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent as compared with the last one year period when private
ownership of a firearm was legal.

The law-abiding citizens did turn in their personal firearms, the criminal element did not and thus criminals in Australia still possess their guns.

While data for the 25 years preceding the confiscation of privately owned guns showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months as criminals now are assured their victims will be unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.

Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was
expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns.'

This story of well intentioned government intervention in the rights of lawful individuals to own and possess firearms won't be seen in the mainstream US media or on the American evening news.

President Obama who advocates a similar confiscation in the US will not be reporting any of this to you.

But, the Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Americans may want to take note before it's too late!

DON'T BE A MEMBER OF THE SILENT MAJORITY.

BE A PARTICIPANT IN THE VOCAL MINORITY WHO DOESN'T WANT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED IN AUSTRALIA HAPPEN IN THE US !

Oh SoCo when are you going to learn that restricting 2nd amendment rights just simply won't work! Bans have been tried previously, both here and in other countries. Statistics show time and time again, that it simply does not help improve the crime rate. All it does is restrict law abiding citizens from owning those firearms.

The thugs will always find a way to acquire the guns they want. Mexico needs to fix their own problems and not blame the US. Here in the US we already have laws on the books. If border town gunshops are breaking the law, then ATF needs to enforce them.

Oh cowgal, tell me when a thirty round banana clip for an AK-47 is even remotely needed by a civilian? The excuse that criminals will do what they want anyway isn't a rationale one to me. If that's the case why not abolish all laws and live in a state of anarchy. Hey, why limit the drinking age? Let's start allowing kids to drink and drive because you know restricting any kind of rights is just ludicrous.

You need to change your tag line on your posts to read:

Just because you believe a 30 round clip or "black" guns are not needed, does not give you the right to ban them. I may not hunt with them, but I do find them fun to shoot. Do I need them? Of course not. And stay on topic, this doesn't have anything to do with drinking age. This bill is simply another example of the dems need to regulate and restrict.

If Mexico is so concerned about what's entering their country then why in the hell aren't they doing border searches?? Blaming the US is very lame.

Hey, I think it'd be fun to roll down the hwy in an Abraham's tank blasting shots over the bow of slow drivers in the fast lane, should I be allowed to do it. And, my comment is on topic. We're talking about rights and laws and the example fits.

Wow, what a messed up argument....
What cowgal is saying is currently legal, what you're proposing is a Felony act. Always has been, always will be. Is this the best you can do man?

No, you don't get it at all. There are millions of responsible firearm owners, yes even ones with those dreaded black guns, that are law abiding. But NO, you don't hear about them, you have to focus on the handful that are not.

Do you really think taking away our rights will fix problems in Mexico? Get real SoCo! How long have we been battling the war on drugs? Has any of it worked? There are laws against illegal drugs - right?

I'm not saying it would 'fix' the problem, but you can't deny it would help. Mexican gangsters are getting guns from unscrupulous firearms dealers in America and wreaking havoc on the border. This is just one example. And, you think allowing this to continue so your right to having 'fun' isn't impinged upon is more important.

I know, I know, you're all for deregulation for everything no matter what harm it might cost if it hinders your fun or money making ability.

It's called using an example, a little extreme but fitting. Her argument is it's fun. Mine is it may be fun, but it's potentially dangerous in the wrong hands and should be regulated. My example is just because a certain desire or behavior may considered 'fun' we still have rules and law in place when the action can be potentially dangerous to others.

If you can't understand that fine, I accept you see it differently.
