Obama Doesn't Think It Is a Big Deal - Do You?

Sotomayor saidt in a 2001 lecture that "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Was her comment just a poor choice of words as Obama says or is it a racist comment that should disqualify her from serving on the SCOTUS?

Compare her comment to those made by white males in the past, Limbaugh, Jimmy the Greek, Michael Richards and the consequences they paid for interjecting race into a conversation. Does her comment compare to theirs and should the consequences be the same?

The question I have is why interject race into a conversation? Couldn't she just have said that my life experiences uniquely qualify me to make better decisions than someone who hasn't had those experiences. What does making a good decision have to do with gender or race?

Racist is racist, regardless of who says it. She should NOT have used "Latina" or "woman" when talking about her qualifications.

As CVC stated, she could simply have stated that her life experiences help qualify her for the position.

How about if a white male was selected and he said "...because I'm a white man, I'm better qualified to serve... " doesn't sound too good, does it?

Or better yet, if someone were to question her judgment by saying she has a different view on things because she's a latina.

If we wanted to go there, we could cut to the core and look at how that latina perspective has helped turn Mexico into a bastion of legal propriety.

Good point Expat.

Can you imagine the outrage if Rush said, "well friends, you have to understand why she has that view - first she is a female and second, she is a latina. We all know that latinas think different than us white males."

I wonder if jrsimplot will weigh in on this issue. I hope so - he comes across as a bit of an elitist academic, but he does offer a fresh perspective.

Rush Limbaugh? Are you kidding me? Are you going to quote Sidney Omar or Nostradamus next?

All of this is talk about her legal positions and public statements is non-applicable. The Democrats have made it clear that attack dog tactics like that have no place in the discussion regarding SCOTUS nominees, as demonstrated in their efforts against Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas.

President Obama's election demonstrates that the American people don't care for attack politics over things like a person's legislative record or experience. What matters is the person's personal qualities -- things like temperment and judgment. President Obama says she's the right person for the job, and that ought to count for something. People need to stop badgering her about how she views the law and focus on her life story and personality.

Not sure if I totally agree, but you raise some very good points that have caused me to think or should I say rethink.

For a liberal, you have a way with words that makes one pause and think about the other side of the issue.

Gee CVC, why not give us the full quote within the context of the speach?

Just curious.

Whenever I hear a quote like this I always wonder.

Here. "our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging." "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life,"

Changes things I think.

So yes, how many women have there been on the court? How many Hispanics? and yes being of a minority in both cases might make one more understanding of a veiwpoint other than ones own.

I think those who call her racist are projecting. Let me turn it around it seems that many who call her racist are the most racist elements of the right. Buchanan, Tancredo, Limbaugh etc. Are any of you who call her racist really racist yourselves?

Executive Director of Pat Buchanan's and Tom Tancredo's Team America PAC and The American Cause convicted of hate crime Friday for a random attack on a black woman in Georgetown.

I'd just drop the whole race thing and talk about her record, especially if I belonged to a party that is lead by Rush Limbaugh and frequently has Tancredo and Buchanan on the Tee Vee as it's spokespersons.

People apparentlly don't get it that it's not racist for her to be proud of her heritage, or to believe that it gives her an advantage over other races or sexes. And I agree with you, pangolin -- there haven't been enough hispanics or women on the court, and it's time we fixed that in the interest of moving past bigotry.

True.

First and foremost, we should think about what would be said if a white male said the same thing about a latina woman. That white male would NEVER be allowed to show his face in public again. Why is it OK for her to say it? At the very least, an apology is in order.

Next, with the race issue aside, we should look at where she stands on the 2nd ammendment. ABYSMAL! Sotomayor says gun ownership isn't a "fundamental right." She also stated the 2nd amendment DIDN'T apply to the states.

Lastly, I don't have a problem with a person of any race, gender or sexual orientation being on the Supreme Court. I just don't like where she stands on the 2nd ammendment.

Oh, that's precious -- we need to make sure we pick someone of the right race and sex to make sure we're not racist or sexist. Laugh Laugh Laugh
