Never shot one but I remember seeing them years back. I was in the Navy at my A school at Dam Neck Va. Behind our barracks there was swamp and in the morning when we would do our run they would be on the grass by the swamp or running across the road. Big bastards running in groups pretty freaky the first time I saw them. I think a 22 Mag or 17 HMR would down em out to hundred with a well placed shot.
We have some here in Texas, and I have killed a few. Not too agressive to humans, will drown a dog if they follow into the water. Act sort of like a coon. I would say .22 MAG or Shot Gun out to around 50 Yards, go for the head.
When it comes to scent, there are basically two types; those that attract and those that mask. I've tried both on many occasions. There are lots and lots of "doe in heat" scents, designed to attract a big buck into range. I've also used a "cow in heat" scent while elk hunting.
Another scent would almost be better named as a "coverup smell". The main goal is to cover up human odor or mask it. Though I don't believe you can ever totally eliminate all human...
